Algiers Coffee House, a Harvard Square favorite that just closed its doors, may not be out of business for long, the owner’s son told the Herald.

“We didn’t expect it to have such an abrupt ending,” said Sharis Duriz, son of the restaurant owner, Emile Duriz.

Sharis Duriz said he has several meetings scheduled today with hopes to find investors, or to possibly transfer ownership of the Mediterranean cafe located at 40 Brattle St. in Cambridge. Duriz said his “father has recently taken a backseat” in management.

Algiers served as a cherished hangout and study hall for students, professors, residents and tourists during the 45-year run in Brattle Hall. The quaint neighborhood cafe became an icon in Harvard Square.

Coffeehouse fans and loyal patrons from years ago took to Facebook and Twitter to lament Sunday’s closing.

One thanked Emile for giving her a first job, and home, in America. Another shared the experience of bringing her daughter to her old high school haunt. The sentiment of almost all posts agreed there would be a hole in Harvard Square without Algiers.

Sharis Duriz said, after today’s meetings, he plans to send out a press release by the end of the week explaining what the future holds for the restaurant.

“I grew up there,” he said. “Thanks to everyone for taking an interest.”
