“OUIJA: ORIGIN OF EVIL”

-

Rated PG-13. Grade: B

“Ouija: Origin of Evil,” a sequel to the 2014 lowachieving “Ouija,” proves you can make a better follow-up if you have the right team and a little girl who scurries like a spider on the walls and ceiling.

Set more than 50 years before the previous entry, “Ouija: Origin of Evil” begins in 1967 Los Angeles with scenes depicting a supernatural home-business scam being conducted by members of the Zander family. Widow Alice Zander (Elizabeth Reaser) is the phony medium. Daughters Lina (Annalise Basso), an adolescent who has discovered boys, and 9-year-old Doris (a very spooky Lulu Wilson) are her noise-making, hidden helpers. “Origin of Evil” has a sense of campy fun about it, and let's face it, a Quija board can be authentically unnerving and possessed kids never lose their ability to rattle us. “Origin of Evil” has plenty of cheap moments when something jumps at the camera. But some of the images are genuinely frightening.
