Jerry York’s latest challenge
The year after it won the 2001 national title, Boston College lost 10 excellent players. Gone through graduation were stars the magnitude of Brian Gionta, Rob Scuderi, Bobby Allen and Scott Clemmensen. Then underclassmen Chuck Kobasew, Krys Kolanos and Brooks Orpik jumped to the NHL. Yet, that following season, York performed one of his finest coaching jobs, guiding BC to a 18-18-2 mark. After watching his club lose a dozen players from last year's Frozen Four entry (28-8-5), including seven underclassmen to early pro signings, York faces a similar challenge. The cupboard is hardly bare with the likes of Colin White (Ottawa first-rounder), siblings Ryan and Casey Fitzgerald, Chris Calnan, Austin Cangelosi and Scott Savage, but the challenge remains steep.
