FBI bombshell nothing short of ‘rotten’
Comey leaves us guessing
When I heard about the recent re-emergence of the email server scandal that has plagued Hillary Clinton’s campaign for the Oval Office, the famous line from the Shakespearean tragedy “Hamlet” came to mind: “Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”
And now comes the revelation that the FBI is digging into yet another batch of Hillary Clinton emails — this time as part of its investigation into sexts allegedly sent by former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner to a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina. Clearly, this is meant to impact the race for the White House.
Whether we find out the full details or not, we are left guessing as to what could have been so egregious that these new emails needed to be revealed 11 days before Election Day.
FBI Director James B. Comey’s vague announcement comes across as an orchestrated hatchet job designed to do one thing: torpedo Clinton’s campaign.
Regardless of whether investigators provide the details that Clinton is requesting in the next nine days, the damage has already been done.
Adding to the mess is the fact that this latest twist has dragged top Clinton aide Huma Abedin and her disgraced and estranged husband into the conversation.
You’d be hard-pressed to write a more provocative script than that.
What a setup. Does anyone seriously believe that it was Donald Trump’s constant focus on the emails that prompted the magical appearance of this new, and highly questionable, batch of emails?
It’s not hard to see why some people think this is the payback he telegraphed for Clinton — whom he has repeatedly blamed for digging up the “Access Hollywood” tape that showed him bragging about sexually assaulting women.
I don’t think rational people believe there was anything sinister on Clinton’s part when it came to the use of her private email server. She made a mistake and apologized for it. In fact, many polls show the majority of Americans are tired of the email saga and feel federal investigators correctly found there was no intentional wrongdoing on her part.
That’s why Friday’s “bombshell” seems not only disingenuous — but totally unfair.
Most of us knew the first woman nominated for president would face a rough and tumble campaign, but this is ridiculous.
Come to think of it, there was another campaign in recent memory that was also pretty ugly. It was the race that led to the election of our first black president.
Change is never easy. But it doesn’t need to be quite so blatantly offensive.
