Crimson keep pace atop Ivy League

Semar Smith’s 7-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter provided the winning points for 24th-ranked Harvard as the Crimson defeated Dartmouth, 23-21, yesterday during an Ivy League clash in Hanover, N.H.

The Crimson (6-1, 4-0) kept pace atop the Ivy League with Penn while the Big Green (3-4, 0-4) are winless in conference play after finishing in a threeway tie for the Ivy title with Harvard and Penn last season.

Smith’s score with eight seconds left in the third quarter completed a 12-play, 72-yard drive for a 23-14 lead. The Crimson’s PAT was blocked and Dartmouth scored on Jack Heneghan’s 9-yard run with 2:32 remaining but Harvard ran out the clock.

Joe Viviano was 19-of-30 for 206 yards passing and a touchdown for Harvard, which has won 13 straight against Dartmouth.

Dartmouth matched its season low with 69 rushing yards. Heneghan was 32-of-48 for 299 yards and a score.

Penn 21, Brown 14 — Alek Torgersen threw for 284 yards and two scores and the Quakers (5-2, 4-0 Ivy League) scored all their points in the first half to defeat the Bears (2-5, 1-3) in Philadelph­ia. The Quakers have won 10 straight Ivy League games. New Hampshire 43, Stony

Brook 14 — Trevor Knight threw for three touchdowns, ran for another and the Wildcats (6-3, 4-1 Colonial Athletic Associatio­n) beat the Seawolves (5-3, 4-1) in Durham, N.H.

The Seawolves came in tied atop the league with James Madison. The Wildcats were in a three-way tie for third.

UNH took command in the third quarter with 21 points including Knight’s 1-yard run and scoring passes to Neil O’Connor and Malik Love.

Stony Brook’s defense had not given up a touchdown in its 10 previous quarters but Knight hit Dalton Crossan for a 9-yard score at 11:21 of the first quarter. Prince Smith added his second

pick-6 in two weeks with a 43-yard return for UNH, which came in with a nation-leading five defensive touchdowns. Crossan’s had a 14-yard TD run in the fourth quarter. Maine 35, William & Mary

28 — Micah Wright returned a punt 67 yards for a backbreaki­ng score and Najee Goode forced a fumble just inside the 20 to halt a last-minute drive and preserve the win for the Black Bears (5-3, 4-1 CAA) over the Tribe (3-5, 1-4) in Williamsbu­rg, Va.

Two fumble recoveries were the difference as the Black Bears won their fifth straight.

The Tribe fell behind 28-7 in the second quarter before twice pulling within a touchdown.

The punt return came at 28-21. Wright danced left to evade the first W&M tackler, cut upfield to streak past five defenders and stiff-armed the punter at about the 38 en route to the 67-yard return.

James Madison 84, Rhode Island 7 — Bryan Schor threw for a career-high 309 yards and tied a school record with five touchdowns as the Dukes (7-1, 5-0 CAA) scored a record number of points, dominating the Rams (18, 0-6) in Harrisonbu­rg, Va.

Colgate 26, Holy Cross 8 — Jake Melville passed for 225 yards and rushed for 83 yards with a touchdown to help the Raiders (3-4, 2-1 Patriot) beat the Crusaders (3-6, 1-3) in Hamilton, N.Y.

Holy Cross scored on a 5-yard pass from Emmett Clifford to Brendan Flaherty with 35 seconds to go.

Duquesne 35, Bryant 31 — Dillon Buechel passed for 298 yards with four touchdown passes to Blair Roberts to help the Dukes (5-3, 2-1 Northeast) beat the Bulldogs (3-5, 2-2) in Pittsburgh. East Carolina 41, UConn 3 — Isaiah Jones moved into second place on the all-time NCAA reception list with 19 catches for 185 yards and a touchdown and the Pirates (3-5, 1-3 American) routed the Huskies (3-6, 1-5) in Greenville, N.C. Southern Conn. 35, Bentley 13 — Vochan Fowler ran for 114 yards and two touchdwns as the Owls (5-4, 5-3) blasted past the Falcons (5-4, 5-3 Northeast-10 Conference) in New Haven, Conn.

New Haven 35, AIC 0 — Lemar Thomas ran for a pair of scores and the Chargers (5-4, 5-3 NE10) limited their opponent to 33 rushing yards in this win over the Yellow Jackets (3-6, 3-5) in Springfiel­d. Assumption 30, Stonehill 6 — Marc Monks completed 21-of32 passes with two of his three scoring strikes to Ashton Grant as the Greyhounds (8-1, 7-1 NE10) beat the Skyhawks (3-6, 3-5) in Easton. Saint Anselm 28, Merrimack 17 — Joe Hayman ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns while Yianni Gavalas passed for a two more scores as the Hawks (2-7, 2-6 NE-10) beat the Warriors (27, 2-6) in Manchester, N.H.
