Tufts men’s soccer reaches national final

Stephen McMillian and Zach Halliday scored goals and Tufts edged St. Thomas (Minn.) in Salem, Va., yesterday to advance to the Division 3 men’s soccer national championsh­ip game.

The Jumbos (145-2) will seek their second title in three years when they face Calvin College today.

Halliday’s goal in the 61st minute gave Tufts a 2-0 lead and it held off the Tommies (20-2-3).

McMillian’s goal was in the 39th minute.

Calvin 1, Brandeis 0 — Ben Woodhouse recorded four saves but the Judges (13-6-4) fell to the Knights (23-2-0) in the NCAA Div. 3 semifinal. Micah Beard tallied the lone goal in the 74th minute.

North Carolina 1, Providence 0 — Drew Murphy scored in the second overtime to give the Tar Heels (143-3) a win over the Friars (15-7-0) in the NCAA Div. 1 quarterfin­als in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Women’s soccer

Washington (Mo.) 2, Brandeis 1 — Haliana Burhans scored but the Judges (16-4-4) fell to the Bears (182-3) in the NCAA Div. 3 semfinals in Salem, Va.

Football

Washington 41, Colorado 10 — Taylor Rapp returned one of his two intercepti­ons for a touchdown and Myles Gaskin ran for 159 yards to help the No. 4 Huskies (12-1) all but lock up a berth in the playoff with a rout of the No. 9 Buffaloes (10-3) in the Pac-12 championsh­ip at Santa Clara, Calif.

Western Michigan 29, Ohio 23 — In Detroit, Robert Spillane intercepte­d a pass with 51 seconds remaining, and the No. 13 Broncos (13-0) held off the Bobcats (9-4) to win their first Mid-American Conference title since 1988.

Men’s hockey

Boston University 2, Providence 1— Jake Oettinger made a careerhigh 38 saves and the No. 6 Terriers (8-4-1, 3-1-1 Hockey East) defeated the host Friars (5-6-2, 1-4-1).

Harvard 4, St. Lawrence 2 — Alexander Kerfoot’s two goals helped the Crimson (7-2-1, 3-1-1 ECAC) drop the Saints (8-5-4, 5-1-2) in Canton, N.Y.

UConn 3, UMass-Lowell 2 — Tage Thompson scored twice and the visiting Huskies (5-6-5, 3-3-1 HE) nipped the No. 4 River Hawks (85-2, 4-3-0).

Holy Cross 2, Air Force 2 — T.J. Moore and Charlie Barrow lit the lamp as the Crusaders (5-5-3, 2-2-3 AHC) tied the Falcons (7-5-3, 4-2-1) in Worcester.

Canisius 4, Bentley 3 — Dylan McLaughlin’s two goals helped the Golden Griffins (6-8-2, 5-3-2 AHC) edge the Falcons (3-7-3, 2-5-2) in Buffalo.

Army 1, AIC 0 — Ian Mansfield’s third-period goal lifted the Black Knights (7-5-1, 7-4-0 AHC) over the Yellow Jackets (3-6-6, 3-5-5) in West Point, N.Y.

Norwich 6, UMass-Boston 2 — Paul Russell netted two goals as the Cadets (8-1-1, 6-1-0 NEHC) beat the Beacons (5-3-1, 2-3-0) in Northfield, Vt.

Saint Michael’s 4, Babson 2 — Danny Divis collected two goals as the Purple Knights (3-7-0, 2-5-0 NEHC) toppled the Beavers (7-3-1, 4-1-0) in Burlington, Vt.

Tufts 3, Williams 3 — Colby Cretella scored with 3:14 left and the Ephs (1-2-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) knotted the Jumbos (4-1-1, 2-0-1) in Williamsto­wn.

Women’s hockey

Boston University 4, UConn 1 — Victoria Hanson registered 27 saves as the Terriers (11-5-1, 7-5-0 Hockey East) topped the Huskies (8-6-3, 3-3-1) in Storrs, Conn.

Cornell 3, Harvard 0 — Molly Tissenbaum had 23 saves but the Crimson (1-9-0, 1-5-0 ECAC) fell to the Big Red (7-4-1, 5-2-1) in Ithaca, N.Y.

Men’s basketball

Tufts 74, Brandeis 72 — Vincent Pace poured in 21 points and the No. 3 Jumbos (6-0) outlasted the Judges (3-3) in Waltham.
