Mansfield girls maul Attleboro

- By GREG DUDEK Joe Reardon and Brendan Connelly contributed to this report.

Early on, the Mansfield girls basketball team got an indication it was going to be their night. The signal came when Ann Maher and Jennifer Peel banked in backto-back 3-pointers against Attleboro as part of a 16-2 run to begin the contest.

The Hornets rolled from there with a tenacious defensive effort to come away with a lopsided win, 61-30, in the Hockomock League.

“It was our night. Everything went our way,” Mansfield coach Mike Redding said. “When you’re shootings 3’s and they go off the backboard when you don’t mean them to, it’s a sign it’s going to be a good night.”

The previously unbeaten Blue Bombardiers (8-1, 4-1 Hockomock) were never able to recover against the defensive pressure applied by the still-perfect Hornets (7-0, 5-0). Mansfield forced 22 turnovers and held Attleboro to 20 percent shooting from 3-point range.

“I thought the bottom line was we played really good man-to-man defense,” Redding said. “We play a lot of zone, but we thought the only way we could defend them was man up.”

Peel led the offensive effort with 22 points and Maher finished with 15. In a 16-0 run to open the fourth quarter, Peel and Maher both hit a pair of 3’s.

Sarah Deyo finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Blue Bombardiers.

Josie Toussant hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Northeast (5-3) a 39-37 win against Presentation of Mary in a Commonwealth Athletic Conference tilt.

Maddy Fay tallied 17 points as Braintree (6-1) crushed Dedham, 73-41, in the Bay State Conference.
