UConn women break own mark

Top-ranked UConn broke its own NCAA record with its 91st consecutiv­e victory, scoring the first 21 points and romping past SMU, 88-48, yesterday in Dallas.

Coach Geno Auriemma and the Huskies (16-0, 4-0 American Athletic Conference) broke the record of 90 that his team first accomplish­ed more than six years ago. They matched that mark with a 65-point rout of No. 20 South Florida last week.

The four-time defending national champion Huskies haven’t lost a game since falling in overtime at sixthranke­d Stanford on Nov. 17, 2014.

Their first 90-game winning streak broke the Division 1 record of 88 straight wins by the UCLA men’s basketball team and famed coach John Wooden.

Katie Lou Samuelson scored 28 points, Naphessa Collier added 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds for UConn in beating SMU (10-7, 1-3).

Tufts 70, Hamilton 42 — Melissa Baptista had 18 points and Sadie Otley added 16 off the bench as the Division 3 top-ranked Jumbos (15-0, 4-0 NESCAC) beat the Continenta­ls (7-7, 1-3 NESCAC) in Clinton, N.Y.

Men’s basketball

Syracuse 76, Boston College 53

— Tyus Battle had a career-high 21 points and the Orange (11-7, 3-2 ACC) scored 20 points off 20 turnovers by the Eagles (9-9, 2-3) in Syracuse, N.Y.

Towson 74, Northeaste­rn 67 — Arnaud William Adala Moto made 12-of-13 free throws and finished with 24 points as the Tigers (10-9, 2-4) hung on for a Colonial Athletic Associatio­n win over the Huskies (12-6, 5-1) in Towson, Md. The Tigers halted the Huskies’ eightgame winning streak despite 18 points from NU’s T.J. Williams. UMass-Lowell 71, Hartford 55 — Jahad Thomas had 19 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists to record the first triple-double in school history as the River Hawks (8-10, 3-1) blasted past the Hawks (5-13, 0-3) for an America East win in Lowell.

Stony Brook 74, Maine 54 — Lucas Woodhouse had 20 points and the Seawolves (8-8, 3-0 American East) beat the Black Bears (5-14, 1-3) in Orono, Maine. New Hampshire 73, Binghamton 66 — Daniel Dion hit five 3-pointers as the Wildcats (11-6, 2-1) beat the Bearcats (9-10, 0-4) in Durham, N.H.

Lehigh 68, Holy Cross 51 — Tim Kempton grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 23 points and Mountain Hawks (10-7, 4-2 Patriot League) beat the Crusaders (9-10, 3-3) in Bethlehem, Pa.

Providence 65, Seton Hall 61 — In Providence, Rodney Bullock scored 22 points, Kyron Cartwright had 20 and the Friars (12-7, 2-4 Big East) beat the Pirates (12-5, 2-3) in the 100th meeting between the two schools. Georgetown 72, Connecticu­t 69 — L.J. Peak scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half as the Hoyas (108) claimed a nonleague win over the Huskies (7-10) in Washington.

Babson 76, Wheaton 57 — Nick Comenale had 19 points and 11 rebounds to help the top-ranked Beavers (14-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) defeat the Lyons (8-7, 3-1) in Division 3 play in Babson Park.

Tufts 94, Hamilton 81 — KJ Garrett had 19 points as the No. 6 Jumbos (132, 4-0) clubbed the Continenta­ls (104, 2-2) in Medford.

Men’s hockey

Maine 4, UConn 0 — Rob McGovern makes 31 saves as the Black Bears (8-11-3, 2-7-1) beat the Huskies (9-8-6, 5-4-2) at Fenway Park. Nolan Vesey of North Reading scored for Maine.

Providence 4, Vermont 1 — Scott Conway, Vimal Sukumaran and Brian Pinho scored in the third period as the Friars (10-8-4, 2-6-2) beat the No. 12 Catamounts (15-7-2, 7-4-1) in Providence.

Merrimack 4, Notre Dame 2 — Tyler Irvine had a goal plus an assist for the Warriors (8-11-3, 2-5-3) in a Hockey East win over the No. 13 Fighting Irish (13-8-2, 6-4-1) in North Andover. UMass-Lowell 2, Massachuse­tts 1 — Ryan Lohin scored a goal and added an assist to lift the No. 6 River Hawks (15-5-3, 7-3-1) over the Minutemen (516-2, 2-8-1) in Amherst.

Union 2, Harvard 1 — Spencer Foo scored the winner in the third period as the No. 11 Dutchmen (16-5-2, 10-1-1 ECAC) held off the No. 2 Crimson (114-2, 7-3-1) in Schenected­y, N.Y.

Women’s hockey

Maine 6, Northeaste­rn 3 — Alyson Matteau had four points as the Black Bears (8-14-1, 4-10-1) beat the Huskies (13-9-3, 9-7-2) in Orono, Maine. Boston College 3, Merrimack 1 — Andie Anastos scored a goal and had an assist for the No. 6 Eagles (16-3-4, 12-2-2) against the Warriors (8-16-2, 4-13-0) in North Andover. Boston University 3, Vermont 3 — Victoria Bach had tying goal with 1:28 left in regulation as the No. 10 Terriers (12-8-3, 7-7-2) tied the Catamounts (10-7-6, 6-3-4) at Walter Brown Arena.
