Hopkinton girls leave ’em in the dust

- By JOE REARDON

The Hopkinton girls were unbeatable from the start yesterday at the Reggie Lewis Center, never challenged in taking the team title at the Division 3 Coaches Relays.

“I think after four events we hadn’t lost an event yet. . . . I think that kind of fueled the fire for all of them,” said coach Brian Hall, whose team finished second — one agonizing point behind Hingham — last year. “I expressed to them all week that we were here to win it. Boy, they stepped up big time.”

Hopkinton edged out Sharon to win the 4x50-yard dash (25.40), then beat Belmont in the hurdles (30.81). It was more of the same on the track, as the Hillers outdueled a tough Plymouth North squad to win the 4x800 by three seconds in 9:54.75. By the time Hopkinton captured the sprint medley in 4:14.85, team victory was inevitable.

Ashley Donnelly led Hopkinton in both the 4x50 dash and sprint medley. Caroline Estella and Sydney MacDonald had big days in the dash, while Emily Welsh (hurdles) and Gaby Weilding (4x200) were important cogs, along with Isabella Giordano in the sprint and distant medley. Caitlyn Halloran ran anchor on the hurdle team and anchored the 4x400 with a quick 58.2 leg.

Winchester had the lone meet record on the day. Its long jump team combined for a 50-2 effort to better North Attleboro’s 2015 mark.

Wins in the long jump (58-41⁄ 2), high jump (17-93⁄ 4) shot put (17-93⁄ 4) and the 4x50 hurdles (28.10) highlighted North Attleboro’s victory in the boys’ competition. Mario Bresko, Omar Jasseh and Matt Tarantino led winning finishes in both the high and long jumps, while captains Nick Rajotte (dash, sprint medley) and Matt Reimels (sprint medley, 4x400) had strong performances to help North Attleboro’s cause.

“I think the goal was definitely to try to win the meet,” said North Attleboro coach Scott Holster, whose Red Rocketeers (54 points) topped Catholic Memorial (34) and Dartmouth (31). “We knew we had a lot of depth in a lot of places and that definitely showed up for us today. I think they were motivated to come here and test themselves at the state level.”
