Everett spent most of the second half trying to climb Mount New Mission.

The Crimson Tide finally succeeded.

Theo Zidor’s blocked shot led to a breakaway layup by Jordan McAfee with 4.1 seconds left as No. 3 Everett (9-0) rallied to defeat No. 9 New Mission, 67-66, yesterday in the BABC Holiday Classic at Cathedral. McAfee recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, while Ghared Boyce and Isaiah Likely also scored 16 points.

“I like the way we stayed competitive and kept battling,” Everett coach John DiBiaso said. “I was proud of the fact we didn’t pack it in when we were down 8-10 points. We made some big plays down the stretch. We had a lot of different kids in there because of the fouls.”

New Mission (5-4) led 53-45 on a layup by Charlie Mitchell (17 points) with 7:11 left, but Everett chipped away, with the frontcourt duo of Zidor (11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter) and McAfee combining for 19 in the final eight minutes.

McAfee connected on consecutive baskets to narrow the margin to 6362, but Charles Mitchell (game-high 24 points) knocked down his sixth trey to make it 66-62. Boyce responded with a trey at the other end, setting the stage for McAfee’s heroics.
