Terriers sweep away Black Bears

Jake Oettinger made 26 saves and Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist to lead the attack as No. 3-ranked Boston University completed a Hockey East weekend sweep of Maine with a 3-1 win over the Black Bears last night in Orono, Maine.

Keller got things started with an unassisted tally at 15:23 of the first period. Patrick Harper made it 2-0 at 15:32 of the second period, with assists by Jakob Forsbacka Carlsson and Jordan Greenway on the powerplay goal.

After Maine’s Blaine Byron cut the lead in half at 6:18 of the third, Keller set up Brandon Hickey to push the lead back to two at 9:23 for the Terriers (16-5-2, 9-2-2), who are now one point back of first-place Boston College with a game in hand.

Rob McGovern had 34 saves for Maine (8-13-3, 2-9-1). Northeaste­rn 4, Merrimack 2 — Ryan Ruck made 33 saves for the third consecutiv­e game, while Zach Aston-Reese and Matt Filipe each had a goal and an assist to lead the Huskies (810-5, 2-8-3) to a Hockey East weekend sweep of the Warriors (8-12-3, 2-6-3) in North Andover.

Dylan Sikura followed up his three-point night in Friday’s 4-1 win with two assists, and Adam Gaudette potted his 13th goal of the campaign. Jace Hennig had a goal and an assist and Drew Vogler had 31 stops for Merrimack. Providence 3, U-Mass-Lowell 2 — Scott Conway broke a 2-2 tie with 9:01 to play, giving the Friars (12-8-4, 4-62 Hockey East) the big home

win over the No. 5 River Hawks (15-7-3, 7-5-1).

Tyler Wall made 32 saves to keep UML in it, while John Edwardh scored his 11th of the season and C.J. Smith added two assists. Spenser Young had two assists for Providence. Notre Dame 3, New Hampshire 0 — Danny Tirone made 40 saves, but Jake Evans had a goal and an assist and Cal Petersen had 31 stops to lift the No. 14 Fighting Irish (14-8-3, 7-4-2 Hockey East) over the Wildcats (11-9-4, 6-3-3) in South Bend, Ind., and into fourth place in the league standings. Holy Cross 3, Mercyhurst 3— Paul Berrafato had 26 saves and Michael Laffin scored with 5:16 left in regulation to lift the Crusaders (9-9-6, 6-6-6 Atlantic Hockey) to a tough draw with the Lakers (9-13-3, 8-9-3) in Worcester.

Boston College 3, Vermont

0— Katie Burt made 20 stops to post her 28th career shutout, and set the program’s career record with her 81st victory, as the No. 6 Eagles (18-3-4, 14-2-2 Hockey East) blanked the Catamounts (109-7, 6-5-5) in Burlington, Vt. Providence 5, Boston University 5 — Victoria Bach’s hat trick helped the Terriers (12-8-5, 7-7-4 Hockey East) to a 4-1 lead late in the second period, but Meaghan Ricard (two goals) and the host Friars (12-11-2, 7-6-2) rallied for four straight tallies to take a one-goal lead with under

five minutes to go. The visitors, however, had the final say, as Rebecca Leslie’s second goal of the game with 2:32 left in regulation forged a draw. Northeaste­rn 5, Connecticu­t 3 — McKenna Brand snapped a 3-3 tie with 2:33 to go, and then she set up linemate Denisa Krizova for another goal 26 seconds later to help NU (15-9-3, 117-2 Hockey East) pull away from UConn (11-12-3, 6-9-1) in a battle of the Huskies at Matthews Arena.

Yale 3, Harvard 2 — Haley Mullins and Kaitlin Tse scored in the second period to pull the Crimson (3-14-2, 3-9-2 ECAC) within a goal, but Tera Hofmann (41 saves) and the Bulldogs (7-11-3, 5-81) held on to win in New Haven, Conn.
