Mihos serves 10 days over ex-wife debt
Former candidate owed nearly $79G
Former gubernatorial candidate Christy Mihos is free after serving a 10-day sentence at the Barnstable County jail for failing to pay nearly $79,000 he owed his wife as part of a divorce decree, according to a published report.
Mihos, 67, was released on Friday by Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings, the Cape Cod Times reported.
Mihos, who was a Republican candidate for governor in 2006 and 2010, has had a drawn-out, troubled divorce process compounded by his loss of the fortune he made as owner of Christy’s, a chain of convenience stores that he sold in 2009. Court documents indicate he spent his money on his failed campaigns, while his wife accused him of squandering money on strippers and prostitutes.
The couple was granted a divorce in 2013 and Mihos was ordered to give his wife and children his remaining $4 million, but Mihos, who now lives in Stuart, Fla., has had trouble meeting the terms of the divorce agreement, the newspaper reported.
In November, Barnstable Probate and Family Court Justice Robert Scandurra found Mihos guilty of contempt for failing to pay his wife $78,922, according to court documents cited by the newspaper. The judge ordered Mihos to serve a 10-day jail sentence if he couldn’t pay and on Jan. 13, sent him to jail.
In an agreement Mihos signed Jan. 13, he agreed to pay his ex-wife using money from the estate of his mother, Marie Mihos, along with the sale of a boat, the newspaper reported.
Mihos had earlier served nine months’ probation, accused of shoving his wife in 2011.
