WINTER IS COMING
Boston-area residents taking advantage of today’s unseasonably warm weather should enjoy it while it lasts — because a wintry blast is on the way.
It may be hard to believe, but today’s anticipated high temperature in the mid-50s will be followed by a powerful snowstorm that will roar through the region tomorrow and dump between 6 and 12 inches of snow on cities and towns across the Bay State, weather experts warn.
Flurries are expected to start flying early tomorrow and will taper off in the afternoon, according to Bob Thompson, a National Weather Service meteorologist.
The snow is expected to make for a difficult morning commute, Thompson said, and its removal probably will tie up traffic for ther afternoon commute.
The dramatic shift in weather, Thompson said, will push the storm system into the Boston area.
“The weather system affecting us now, as it passes north of us, will bring in some very mild air,” Thompson said, “and that helps set the stage for a snowstorm on Thursday.”
Residents can expect a dramatically colder Friday, with a high temperature expected to reach only the mid-20s, Thompson said, adding that residents should be sure to bundle up before they leave the house.
“We’ve had a lot of mild temperatures this winter, so that may seem pretty cold for a lot of folks even if it’s mostly sunny,” Thompson said. “Even though there will be some sunshine, I don’t think the temperature will be high enough to prelude any melting.”
This week’s rollercoaster weather included an unexpected snowstorm during the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl victory parade through downtown Boston yesterday.
