Fletcher adds to Nashoba event

- By MOIRA McCARTHY

One of New England’s most cherished and successful charitable ski events takes place this weekend, and with an added bonus.

Participants in Saturday’s annual Jimmy Fund Snow Challenge at Nashoba Valley will be personally coached by Olympic ski legend Pam Fletcher.

Fletcher, who still is active in the ski world and takes part in such events at the Deer Valley Celebrity Ski Challenge, will be on hand all day to offer pointers, discuss the course and a racing plan, and even give you last-minute tips right at the starting gate.

“I am so excited to help skiers really get their best runs in,” Fletcher said.

The Jimmy Fund Challenge is open to all skiers and riders and asks that participants help raise funds for the Dana Farber Cancer Center, one of the world’s premier cancer treatment and research centers. Saturday’s event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The entry fee for a fourperson race team is $240. Individual racers can also take part for a fee of $60 (which goes to the Jimmy Fund). All racers receive a lift ticket for the day and a barbecue lunch.

You can raise more, though, and up your chances of winning by ticking seconds off your speed. For every $150 raised above the entry fee, a full second is deducted from the final race time. That means the more you help fund cancer treatment and research, the better racer you are (at least on this day).

Following the race, there is a live auction with great items, an awards ceremony and an après ski party.

The event has been held at Nashoba for more than a decade. Folks who want to cheer on teams and join the fun are invited to come and do just that, with a chance to donate to teams (and help them cut their time).

Pre-registration is available online and encouraged, and day-of registration is available that morning. Course check and warmups take place all morning, with lunch beginning at 11:30 and the racing beginning at high noon.
