Third-period explosion carries BU

Patrick Harper notched two goals and an assist as fourth-ranked Boston University potted four unanswered goals in the third period to snap a tie and post an 8-4 victory over New Hampshire last night in a Hockey East game in Durham, N.H.

Goals by Chase Phelps and Harper two minutes apart erased a 3-1 UNH lead seven minutes into the second period. Ara Nazarian gave the Wildcats (12-15-5, 7-9-4) the lead back at 16:18, but defenseman Dante Fabbro tied it for the Terriers (20-9-3, 12-5-3) with 1:17 left in the second.

Harper’s second of the night at 3:30 started the third-period fireworks, followed by goals from Kieffer Bellows, Bobo Carpenter and Clayton Keller, as BU

pulled within two points of first-place Boston College in the league standings.

Tyler Kelleher had a goal and two assists for UNH, to retake the national scoring lead with 57 points. Northeaste­rn 4, Connecticu­t 1 — Zach Aston-Reese had three goals and an assist, giving him 56 points on the season, to power Northeaste­rn (15-12-5, 8-9-3 Hockey East) to a weekend sweep of UConn (10-14-8, 6-10-4) in a battle of Huskies at Matthews Arena.

Aston-Reese became the first Husky to record three hat tricks in a season in 30 years, and the first NCAA player to do so since 2014. He’s also the first Husky to record 25 goals and 25 assists in the same season since 1986. UMass-Lowell 5, UMass 2— John Edwardh had two goals and an assist, C.J. Smith added a goal and three assists and Tyler Wall stopped 23 shots as the No. 6 River Hawks (20-9-3, 12-7-1 Hockey East) beat the Minutemen (5-25-2, 2-17-1) at the Mullins Center in Amherst to remain in fourth place in the league. Merrimack 4, Maine 4 — Jace Hennig’s second goal of the game at 9:32 of the third period gave the Warriors (13-13-6, 7-7-6 Hockey East) a tie with the Black Bears (10-18-4, 4-14-2) in North Andover.

Matt Morris had 41 stops to help Maine steal a point. Notre Dame 3, Providence 3— Erik Foley scored his 14th of the campaign and Hayden Hawkey had 32 stops, but the No. 10 Friars (18-9-5, 11-5-4 Hockey East) were foiled by Cal Petersen (39 saves) and the No. 15 Irish (18-9-5, 10-7-3) in a draw in South Bend, Ind. Harvard 6, Brown 0 — Ryan Donato set up four goals, and Tyler Moy scored twice and added an assist as the No. 3 Crimson (20-5-2, 14-4-2 ECAC) overwhelme­d the Bears (4-21-2, 3-16-1) in Providence to post their eighth straight win. Army 4, Holy Cross 2 — Peter Crinella and Ryan Ferrill scored for the Crusaders (13-13-6, 10-10-6 Atlantic Hockey) but Parker Gahagen (30 saves) and the Black Knights (16-11-4, 15-92) took the points in West Point, N.Y. Sacred Heart 3, Bentley 2 — Late third-period goals by Alexey Solovyev and Drew Callin weren’t enough as the Falcons (11-15-6, 10-11-5 Atlantic Hockey) fell to the Pioneers (11-16-5, 9-14-3) in Fairfield, Conn.

Women

Providence 4, Boston College 1 — Madison Myers made 32 saves, and Kathleen McHugh had two goals and an assist to power the host Friars (16-14-3, 11-9-3) to the Hockey East upset of the No. 6-ranked Eagles (22-5-5, 16-4-3).

Brown 3, Harvard 1 — Brianna Laing made 26 stops and sister Lexie scored her eighth goal of the season, but the host Crimson (5-195, 5-13-4 ECAC) were outdueled by Monica Elvin (42 saves), Sena Hanson (two goals, assist) and the Bears (7-22-0, 5-17-0).
