Syracuse stuns No. 10 Duke

John Gillon hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer, and Syracuse upset No. 10 Duke, 78-75, in an ACC men’s basketball clash last night in Syracuse, N.Y., to keep its NCAA tournament hopes alive.

With just 7.5 seconds left on the clock after a Duke miss, Gillon drove to the top of the key and banked in a desperatio­n shot to send the Carrier Dome fans into a frenzy as they stormed the court.

Syracuse (17-12, 9-7) had lost three straight and needed another signature victory to go with its two other top10 (Virginia, Florida State). The Orange have two games remaining, at Louisville on Sunday and at home to Georgia Tech on March 4.

Gillon finished with 26 points and Tyus Battle had 18 for Syracuse in a game that featured 11 ties, half of them in the closing minutes.

Luke Kennard led Duke (22-6, 10-5) with 23 points.

Kansas 87, TCU 68 — In Lawrence, Kan., Frank Mason III scored 20 points, Carlton Bragg (15) provided a big lift off the bench and the No. 3 Jayhawks (25-3, 13-2) pulled away in the second half to beat the Horned Frogs (17-11, 6-9) and clinch a share of its 13th consecutiv­e Big 12 regular-season championsh­ip.

Butler 74, Villanova 66 — Kelan Martin scored 22 points and fueled a stunning second-half rally as the No. 22 Bulldogs (22-6, 11-5 Big East) snapped the on-campus winning streak of the No. 2 Wildcats (26-3, 13-3) at 48 games.

Kamar Baldwin added 15 points for Butler, which has handed the defending national champion Wildcats two of their three losses this season. Jalen Brunson scored 24 points and Josh Hart had 18 for Villanova.

Oregon 68, California 65 — In Berkeley, Calif., Dylan Brooks hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds to play to cap a comeback from 16 points down and the No. 6 Ducks (25-4, 14-2) shocked the Golden Bears (18-9, 9-6) to keep hope alive for a Pac-12 title.

North Carolina 74, Louisville 63 — In Chapel Hill, N.C., Justin Jackson scored 21 points and the No. 8 Tar Heels (24-5, 12-3) used a big second half to beat the No. 7 Cardinals (22-6, 10-5) and hold onto the ACC lead.

Providence 68, Creighton 66 — Kyron Cartwright made a 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left, Emmitt Holt scored all 18 of his points in the second half and the Friars (17-11, 7-8 Big East) upset the No. 23 Bluejays (22-6, 9-6) in Omaha, Neb.

Minnesota 89, Maryland 75 — Dupree McBrayer scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half, and the Golden Gophers (21-7, 9-6 Big Ten) beat the struggling No. 24 Terrapins (22-6, 10-5) in College Park, Md., for their sixth straight victory. In New England games: Army 73, BU 62 — Luke Morrison scored 19 points on 7-for-8 shooting, including 5-for-5 on 3-pointers, as the Black Knights (12-17, 6-11 Patriot) beat the Terriers (16-13, 11-6) in West Point, N.Y.

BU’s Tyler Scanlon hit a layup to tie the score at 60 with 4:37 left, but Army went on a 10-0 run. Eric Fanning (19) was the only Terriers player in double figures.

Holy Cross 63, Loyola (Md.) 62 — Malachi Alexander had 15 points, Robert Champion added 12 and Anthony Thompson made a free throw with 3.2 seconds left to give the Crusaders (15-15, 9-8 Patriot) a win against the Greyhounds (14-14, 8-9) in Worcester.

Vermont 62, Albany 50 — Payton Henson scored six of his 18 points in an 11-2 closing run and the Catamounts (25-5, 15-0) won their 17th straight game and captured the American East regularsea­son title by beating the Great Danes (18-12, 9-6) in Burlington, Vt.

New Hampshire 78, UMassLowel­l 67 — In Lowell, Tanner Leissner scored 24 points — nine coming in the last five minutes — and the Wildcats (18-11, 9-6 America East) pulled away from the River Hawks (11-20, 5-11), who were led by Jahad Thomas’ 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting.

Springfiel­d 85, Wheaton 82 — Jake Ross scored eight of his 30 points in overtime and added 17 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Pride (14-12) edged the fifth-seeded Lyons (10-6) in the first round of the NEWMAC tournament in Springfiel­d.

Women’s hoops

UConn 90, Temple 45 — Napheesa Collier scored a career high 31 points and the top-ranked Huskies (27-0, 14-0 American) routed the No. 23 Owls (21-6, 11-3) in Hartford to extend the program’s record winning streak to 102 straight games.

Army 64, BU 52 — Sophie Beaudry had 10 points and seven rebounds, but the Terriers (11-16, 9-7 Patriot) lost to the Black Knights (20-7, 11-5) at Case Gym.
