Bills go to ‘Philly’ for wide receiver

-

The Buffalo Bills agreed to terms with wide receiver Corey “Philly” Brown yesterday.

Brown spent the past three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, catching 79 passes for 1,019 yards and seven touch downs in 43 games (22 starts). First-year Bills coach Sean McDermott is familiar with Brown, having served as Carolina’s defensive coordinator from 2011-16.

Brown entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State in 2014. He was originally a restricted free agent this offseason but did not receive a tender from Carolina.

The Bills are in the midst of revamping their receiving corps. Buffalo has only one other established player at the position, Sammy Watkins, after losing Robert Woods and Marquise Goodwin in free agency.

Giants ink Fluker

The New York Giants have signed former San Diego Chargers offensive lineman D.J. Fluker to a one-year, $3 million deal.

The Giants announced the signing yesterday.

The 11th pick overall in 2013, Fluker started 61 of 66 regular-season and postseason games for San Diego over the last four seasons. He was released on Tuesday by the Chargers.

Fluker started 31 games in the regular season and two playoff games at right tackle in his first two seasons. He started 12 games at right guard in 2015, and all 16 last season.

The Giants also signed receiver Brandon Marshall and tight end Rhett Ellison in the past week. Former right tackle Marshall Newhouse signed with the Raiders.

Lions boost line

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a deal with guard T.J. Lang, another significant move to bolster their offensive line in a busy offseason.

Agent Mike McCartney acknowledged the threeyear agreement yesterday on Twitter. Detroit also signed tackle Rick Wagner in recent days and could have an upgraded offensive line next season even after the departures of Riley Reiff and Larry Warford.

Lang is from the Detroit area and played in college at Eastern Michigan. But has spent his entire career with Green Bay since the Packers drafted him in the fourth round in 2009. Lang started 13 games last season, but now he’ll return to his home state to join one of Green Bay’s division rivals.

Miller cast off

The Jacksonville Jaguars have released veteran defensive tackle Roy Miller, choosing to go younger and cheaper at the position.

The 29-year-old Miller was due a $400,000 roster bonus today and would have counted more than $4 million against the salary cap in 2017. Former undrafted rookie Abry Jones is expected to take over the starting spot. Jones signed a four-year, $16 million contract last month that will pay him $3.5 million this season.

The decision was more likely made because Jones played as well as Miller did last season after Miller tore his right Achilles tendon in October.

Miller started 49 games in four years with the Jaguars, totaling 105 tackles and five sacks. He was drafted in the third round by Tampa Bay in 2009.
