Choice of plans essential

-

Health insurance should be purchased like we do with auto, life, disability and homeowners policies — where we can choose a plan that best suits our needs (“No easy Rx for health care system,” March 13). Those who are healthy can choose a higher-deductible plan with lower premiums, while another individual with more needs may choose a lower-deductible plan.

Looking at auto insurance policies, typically they do not cover flat tires, oil changes and other minor expenses.

Regarding other health insurance issues, we also need tort reform and competition across state lines to bring down premiums. We also need to look into the high cost of medications — and why they often cost less in other countries. Perhaps it has something to do with all the pharmaceutical companies’ lobbyists? — Lou Valanzola, Rockland
