Islanders catch B’s with win

GJohn Tavares and Anthony Beauvillie­r had shootout goals to lead the New York Islanders by the Penguins, 4-3, last night in Pittsburgh.

With the two points, the Islanders moved into the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. New York is tied with the Bruins at 82 points but has a game in hand. The Bruins visit the Islanders tonight.

Beauvillie­r opened the shootout with a goal, and Tavares snapped a wrist shot past Marc-Andre Fleury in the next round. Sidney Crosby scored in the shootout for Pittsburgh, but Jaroslav Halak, making his first start since Dec. 29, stopped Phil Kessel and Nick Bonino. Halak made 37 saves. Anders Lee, Brock Nelson and Casey Cizikas had goals for New York.

Crosby extended his NHL lead with his 42nd goal. Cameron Gaunce and Matt Cullen also scored for the Penguins.

Lightning 2, Red Wings 1 — Ondrej Palat tied the game early in the third period and Nikita Kucherov scored 3:28 into overtime to give visiting Tampa Bay the win against Detroit.

Andrei Vasilievsk­iy made 29 saves for the Lightning, who are one point behind the Bruins and Islanders for the East’s second wild card.

The Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg opened the scoring in the second period. Petr Mrazek stopped 30 shots.

Stars 6, Sharks 1 — Adam Cracknell got his first hat trick in seven seasons and host Dallas routed San Jose, which lost its fifth straight game and is losing its grip on first place in the West’s Pacific Division.

Ducks 3, Jets 1 — Andrew Cogliano scored late in the second period, Jonathan Bernier made 17 saves and host Anaheim beat Winnipeg.

Corey Perry and Jakob Silvferber­g also scored for Anaheim, which is now tied with San Jose for the lead in the Pacific Division with eight games left for both teams.
