Christy P. Mihos, Cape store chain magnate, at 67
Christy P. Mihos of Stuart, Fla., a former gubernatorial candidate for Massachusetts, died Saturday. He was 67.
Mr. Mihos was born and raised in Brockton.
He graduated from Brockton High School and Stonehill College.
He was a businessman and served on the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority during the Big Dig, later writing a book and screenplay based on his experience.
He was an independent candidate for governor in Massachusetts in 2006 and ran as a Republican in 2010.
Mr. Mihos owned the convenience store chain Christy’s Markets on Cape Cod. The original store was opened in Brockton by his Greek immigrant grandfather, also named Christy Mihos, during the Depression. In the 1970s, Mr. Mihos began running the chain as president and chief executive officer. At its peak, the chain included 144 stores throughout New England.
In 2012, Mr. Mihos was involved in a very public divorce from his wife, Andrea. Mrs. Mihos claimed she was a victim of domestic assault and that Mr. Mihos spent millions of dollars on prostitutes and strippers.
While living in Stuart, he was active in tennis with his many friends. He was an avid sailor and loved the sea.
During the 1980s, he was active at the Panagia Greek Orthodox Church in Cohasset, Mass., where he was president of the Board of Stewards.
Mr. Mihos is survived by two children, Ashley and Christy; a sister, Marlene; a brother, Jim; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnephews and grandnieces.
A funeral service will be held at noon tomorrow at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Fort Pierce, Fla.
Burial will be in Fernhill Memorial Gardens, Stuart, Fla.
