Mason heads All-Americans

Frank Mason III of Kansas was unanimousl­y selected to the 2016-17 AP All-America team yesterday.

Mason, who averaged 20.8 points and 5.1 assists this season, received every first-team vote from the 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly AP Top 25.

Joining Mason on the team are senior Josh Hart of Villanova, sophomore Caleb Swanigan of Purdue, freshman Lonzo Ball of UCLA and junior Justin Jackson of North Carolina.

Hart averaged 18.9 points and 6.5 rebounds. Swanigan led the nation with 26 double-doubles and averaged 18 points and 12 rebounds this season. Ball averaged 14.6 points and 7.9 assists and will enter the NBA draft. Jackson helped the Tar Heels reach the Final Four, averaging 18.1 points.

Giles opts for NBA

Duke forward Harry Giles is entering the NBA draft following a freshman season that was slowed due to knee surgery. Giles arrived at Duke as one of the nation’s top recruits but missed the first 11 games, averaging 3.9 points and 3.8 rebounds. . . .

Xavier point guard Edmond Sumner said he’s entering the NBA draft even though he’s still recovering from a significan­t knee injury. Sumner was Xavier’s second-leading scorer with 15 points per game. . . .

North Carolina State freshman Dennis Smith Jr. is heading to the NBA. The point guard is projected to be a potential top-five pick.

UConn defection

UConn freshman Vance Jackson says he plans to transfer, the second player in a week to leave Kevin Ollie’s program. The 6-foot-8 swingman joins sophomore forward Steven Enoch, who will transfer. Jackson was UConn’s best 3-point threat. . . .

Longtime Akron coach Keith Dambrot is going to Duquesne. Dambrot spent 13 seasons at Akron, compiling a 305-139 record.
