Quinn has answers as Lowell tops BC High

- By MATT FELD Brian Roach and Marcello Rossetti contributed to this report.

Whenever the Lowell baseball team needed an answer, Dalton Quinn was there to provide one.

With the No. 5 Red Raiders and host BC High locked in a tie in the bottom of the eighth inning, Quinn came on in relief with two on and nobody out. The righthander retired the next three Eagles to send the game to the ninth still deadlocked.

Quinn’s clutch play transferred over to the top of the next inning as he drilled a leadoff triple. Moments later, Marc Beland doubled to drive in Quinn with the goahead run and Lowell went on to a 7-3 victory to open its season on a windy afternoon at Monan Park.

Lowell featured seven pitchers in the game, with five working at least one inning.

Red Raiders coach Danny Graham said getting that type of production from a bevy of arms is a great sign early in the season.

“Early on it did not look like there was going to be much offense at all, so we knew we were going to get great production out of everyone on the mound,” Graham said. “We kept the pressure on (BC High) throughout the game and came up with key hits when we had to.”

The Eagles (2-1) were up 2-1 going into the seventh, when Sean O’Connell came in hoping to close out the win.

With one away, Lowell’s Harrison Silva was hit by an O’Connell pitch. Quinn, who finished 3-for4, followed with a single to right as Silva went first to third. Beland brought home the tying run with an infield hit.

Beland came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh and held the Eagles scoreless, forcing extra innings.

Lowell pushed across a run in the top of the eighth. Alex Cruz was hit by a pitch and moved up on a fielder’s choice. Henry Funaro, who started on the mound for Lowell, roped a two-out base hit to center as scored Cruz to put Lowell up 3-2.

BC High did not go away easily in the home half of the frame.

Gavin Reilly and Mike Vasil drew back-to-back walks to begin the inning off Beland. Luke Murphy followed with a single to score Reilly and even the game at 3-3.

Quinn, however, came on in relief and stopped the bleeding to set up Lowell’s decisive ninth.
