Mancini blasts topple Toronto

Trey Mancini hit two home runs, Dylan Bundy pitched six shutout innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the struggling Blue Jays, 11-4, in American League action yesterday in Toronto.

Mancini connected twice for the second time in three games. He also hit two homers in a win against the Red Sox on Wednesday. In this one, he hit a three-run blast off Ryan Tepera in the sixth, then added a solo drive off Matt Dermody in the eighth.

Manny Machado and Craig Gentry also homered for Baltimore.

Toronto lost for the eighth time in nine games and dropped to 2-10 overall. The Blue Jays have scored 34 runs, the fewest in MLB.

Before the game, the Jays placed Aaron Sanchez, last season’s AL ERA leader, on the 10-day disabled list with a blister on his middle finger.

Also, Orioles closer Zach Britton was placed on the 10day DL with a strained left forearm.

Tigers 4, Indians 1 — Matthew Boyd allowed one run in six innings, Alex Avila hit a two-run homer and visiting Detroit dropped Cleveland to take 2-of-3 from the AL champions.

Boyd (2-1) won his second straight start, and Alex Wilson, Justin Wilson and Francisco Rodriguez combined with one-hit relief to finish the seven-hitter.

Royals 1, Angels 0 — Alcides Escobar hit an RBI single in the ninth inning and host Kansas City, boosted by a strong effort from starter Ian Kennedy, edged Los Angeles for its fourth straight win.

White Sox 3, Twins 1 — In Minneapoli­s, Avisail Garcia had a career-high four hits, including an opposite-field, two-run homer in the 10th inning that led Chicago past Minnesota.

Mariners 8, Rangers 7 — Nelson Cruz singled in the tiebreakin­g run to cap a tworun, ninth-inning rally, and host Seattle overcame a fiverun deficit to edge Texas for a three-game sweep.

Astros-Athletics, ppd. — Houston and Oakland were postponed because of rain, the A’s first home rainout since April 2014, and the game will be made up Sept. 9 as part of a doublehead­er.

Yankees 9, Cardinals 3 — Greg Bird busted out of his slump with a long home run that began a perfect night at the plate, and Michael Pineda pitched host New York past St. Louis for its seventh straight victory.

National League

Marlins 4, Mets 2 — Rookie J.T. Riddle launched a tworun homer with two outs in the ninth inning and host Miami, after coming close to holding New York without a hit, bounced back for a win.

Nationals 6, Phillies 4 — Bryce Harper hit a two-run home run in the third inning and a game-ending, threerun drive with two outs in the ninth, leading host Washington over Philadelph­ia.

Pirates 6, Cubs 1 — Adam Frazier homered and visiting Pittsburgh scored six runs in the final two innings to beat Chicago for a three-game sweep of the World Series champions.

Braves 9, Padres 2 — Bartolo Colon allowed only hit in seven dominant innings, Brandon Phillips drove in three runs with three hits and host Atlanta throttled San Diego for its fourth straight win.

Diamondbac­ks 3, Dodgers 1— Taijuan Walker pitched five solid innings and visiting Arizona topped Los Angeles after Dodgers starter Rich Hill was pulled with more blister problems.

Rockies 4, Giants 3 — Rookie Antonio Senzatela won his second straight start as visiting Colorado nipped San Francisco.

Brewers 4, Reds 2 — Ryan Braun hit a go-ahead, tworun homer, Eric Thames added a solo shot for his fifth home run of the series and visiting Milwaukee topped Cincinnati for its fifth win in six games.
