Herald Radio, photographer earn kudos
For the second time in two years, Boston Herald Radio has won national recognition for its pioneering platform.
The prestigious National Headliner Awards has cited Herald Radio for “journalistic innovation,” following the Associated Press Media Editors designation of the station as 2015 Innovator of the Year.
The annual Headliner Awards contest is one of the oldest and largest in the country that recognizes journalistic merit in the communications industry, according to organizers.
Herald Radio won second place in the innovation category, with the Detroit Free Press winning first place and the San Francisco Chronicle taking third.
“Boston Herald Radio’s expanding content and audience is a tribute to our entire news operation,” said Herald Editor-in-Chief Joe Sciacca.
“Fully integrated with our print, digital and video platforms, Herald Radio drives our news coverage every day, enhancing the power and reach of our journalism. We’re honored by the recognition, and proud of all of those in our newsroom who make BHR such a success.”
In another honor, Herald staff photographer Mark Garfinkel’s gripping image of a frantic rescue effort at a flooded construction site won third place in the National Headliner Awards “Newspaper Spot News Photography” category.
Garfinkel’s photograph was selected last month as “Best of Photojournalism” first place in the Domestic News Single category by the National Press Photographer’s Association.
Boston Herald Photo Editor Jim Mahoney said, “I am pleased that Mark and the Boston Herald are receiving this national attention for his great photo that captures all the trauma and emotion of that desperate and tragic scene.”
