Hardy, Orioles edge Reds

J.J. Hardy singled home the tiebreakin­g run in the 10th inning last night, and the Baltimore Orioles held on for a 2-1 victory and an interleagu­e series win over the Reds in Cincinnati.

Hardy fouled off a pair of two-strike pitches before driving in Mark Trumbo from second base with his single off Blake Wood (02). The Orioles took two of three in the series, leaving them 8-4 in interleagu­e play against the Reds. The O’s start a three-game series with the Red Sox tonight at Camden Yards.

Three Orioles pitchers limited the Reds to two hits for the second night in a row.

Darren O’Day (1-1) fanned two of the three batters he faced in the ninth. Brad Brach retired the side in the 10th for his second straight save, filling in while closer Zach Britton recovers from a sore forearm.

Left-hander Wade Miley allowed two hits in eight innings, including Joey Votto’s homer in the fourth. Miley matched his career high by fanning 11 for the third time.

Jonathan Schoop extended his hitting streak to eight games with a solo homer in the second off Scott Feldman, his third homer during the streak.

American League

Rays 8, Tigers 1 — In St. Petersburg, Fla., Steven Souza Jr. came within a single of hitting for the cycle, Erasmo Ramirez and two relievers combined on a five-hitter, and Tampa Bay decked Detroit for a threegame sweep.

Ramirez (2-0) allowed one run and two hits in five innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

Indians 6, Twins 2 — In Minneapoli­s, Trevor Bauer struck out seven in 61⁄ innings 3 and Carlos Santana had two doubles and two RBI to lead Cleveland over Minnesota.

Bauer (1-2) gave up two runs, three hits and three walks, lowering his ERA from 8.44 to 6.35. Andrew Miller pitched 11⁄ innings of 3 scoreless relief and the Indians took all three games in a series that included a rainout

Wednesday night.

Astros 2, Angels 1 — Carlos Beltran hit his first home run this season and Jake Marisnick also homered to help host Houston nip Los Angeles.

Lance McCullers (2-0) scattered three hits and struck out eight over 62⁄ 3 scoreless innings as Houston won for the seventh time in eight games.

Rangers 1, Royals 0 — In Arlington, Texas, Delino DeShields had an RBI single with one out in the 13th inning to score Joey Gallo from second base and Texas beat Kansas City.

Gallo’s double was the first hit for the Rangers since Jonathan Lucroy’s leadoff double in the fifth. It was the first hit in the game since Royals leadoff hitter Alex Gordon’s one-out single in the eighth. Athletics 9, Mariners 6 — Cesar Valdez, filling in for injured opening day starer Kendall Graveman, pitched in the major leagues for the first time in nearly seven years and host Oakland beat Seattle.

Valdez allowed three runs and five hits in four innings, struck out four and walked two. Trevor Plouffe hit a three-run homer in the seventh and Ryan Dull pitched 11⁄ scoreless innings for 3 the victory in the A’s third straight win.

National League

Phillies 6, Mets 4 — Maikel Franco homered and doubled while breaking the longest hitless streak of his career, and visiting Philadelph­ia capitalize­d on an error by untested first baseman Jay Bruce to beat shorthande­d New York.

Mets closer Jeurys Familia struck out two and walked two in a hitless ninth inning of his season debut after serving a 15-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy.

Before the game, the Mets shifted third baseman David Wright to the 60-day disabled list, further delaying his return following neck surgery. Nationals 3, Braves 2 — Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer, Stephen Strasburg struck out 10 and allowed two runs in seven innnings as visiting Washington completed a threegame sweep by edging Atlanta. Brewers 7, Cardinals 5 — Jett Bandy, Eric Thames and Travis Shaw each hit home runs to help host Milwaukee handle St. Louis.

Bandy hit a two-run homer in the sixth and Thames put Milwaukee ahead with a two-run shot off Carlos Martinez (0-3) in the fifth. Shaw’s three-run blast in the first made it 12 consecutiv­e games going yard for the Brewers, who lead the majors with 32 home runs. Padres 4, Diamondbac­ks 1 — Clayton Richard pitched into the seventh inning and Wil Myers and Austin Hedges homered to lead host San Diego over Arizona.
