BC names Jarmond new AD

Boston College found an accomplished Big Ten administrator to manage its affairs in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Ohio State deputy director of athletics Martin Jarmond yesterday was named BC’s athletics director. Jarmond will be formally introduced at a press conference on Monday.

Jarmond replaces Brad Bates, a former Michigan football player who resigned to become vice president of Collegiate Sports Associates.

“My leadership style is consistent with BC’s values (while) operating with integrity, passion and relentless focus on getting better every day,” Jarmond said in a statement.

“I will assure you that I will put in the work to make sure our students, alumni and fans are proud of BC. I knew it would take a special place to leave Ohio State. It is clear to me that Boston College is that place.”

Jarmond inherits a program that has been noncompetitive in the ACC in the marquee sports. The men’s basketball team went 2-36 in the conference over the last two seasons while the women went 5-30. Those records include ACC tournament games.

The football team finished 2-14 in the ACC over the last two seasons but has performed well in nonconference games. The Eagles were 7-6 last season including a 36-30 victory over Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl.

“The opportunity to serve at a topnotch academic institution in the ACC is a dream come true for me,” said Jarmond.

Jarmond served as Ohio State athletics director Gene Smith’s chief of staff and as sports administrator of the football program. He showed a penchant for fund-raising as OSU’s chief advancements officer by helping raise $120 million between 2010 and 2012.

“Martin is one of the best administrators I’ve ever worked with,” said Smith. “His leadership skills are exceptional. It’s been a tremendous honor working with him and watching him develop into a premier athletic administrator. His contributions to the Ohio State University have been significant and he will be missed.”

Buckeyes football coach Urban Meyer has a long working relationship with BC counterpart Steve Addazio, who served as associate head coach and offensive coordinator under Meyer at the University of Florida.

Jarmond is from Fayetteville, N.C., and began his association with the NCAA as a two-time captain of the North Carolina-Wilmington basketball team. He earned All-CAA academic honors and helped the Seahawks qualify for the NCAA tournament.

“I’m delighted that Martin Jarmond will be the next athletics director at Boston College,” said BC president William P. Leahy, SJ. “His work as deputy director of athletics at Ohio State and at Michigan State has given him not only appreciation of the opportunities and challenges of intercollegiate athletics, but also the experience in how to respond to them.

“He is a person with high energy, infectious enthusiasm and an impressive ability to engage with people and issues.
