Alabama LB Tim Williams

-

KEY STATS: The 6-3, 244-pound Williams made 31 tackles, 16 for loss, and nine sacks this past season after compiling 10.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss the previous year. PROS: With the departures of Chris Long and Jabaal Sheard in free agency, one of the key areas the Pats should target this cycle is edge rusher, and Williams is certainly capable of being a good one in the NFL. Although he could have entered the draft earlier, he stayed an extra year to round out his game and become a better defender against the run. Of course, the Pats would have a good idea of what they're getting in Williams from his coach at Alabama and longtime friend of Belichick, Nick Saban. CONS: Off-the-field concerns have pushed Williams down a little from what some initially expected. He has admitted multiple failed drug tests at Alabama and was arrested on a misdemeanor gun charge. Although his play against the run improved last season, it's still far from where it needs to be, as pass rushing right now remains his primary skill. ROOKIE IMPACT? Whether at defensive end or outside linebacker, the Pats could always use another pass rusher. He likely would not start, but could still find a spot in a situational role before possibly taking a stronger foothold once he improves against the run or dropping into pass coverage. AVAILABLE AT NO. 72? Unlikely. Williams is seen by most as a firstround talent, but the off-the-field concerns could cause him to drop. Would he fall as far as No. 72? Probably not, but it's a deep draft for edge players.
