Teen accused of trying to rape peer at Southie club
A 13-year-old boy has been arraigned on charges of assault with intent to rape, accused of attacking another young teen boy last weekend at the South Boston Boys & Girls Club, authorities said.
The teenager was arraigned in juvenile court and was released to the custody of his mother, according to Suffolk District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office. The boy was ordered to have no contact with the victim, and no unsupervised contact with other minors.
The Boys & Girls Club said the attack happened Saturday and released a statement to parents and the media. The club’s letter states: “You may of heard about an incident at our club over the weekend and we wanted to keep you informed. On Saturday afternoon a young boy from a partner organization allegedly assaulted another male club member the same age. Authorities were called, and an arrest was made. We are working with police on the investigation. Because of the ages of the boys involved we cannot provide further details.
“Child safety and protection is our number one priority, and we apply due diligence to all aspects of policy and operation to reduce risk and provide a safe, secure environment.
“If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions please see one of us directly.
“We truly enjoy having your children here. They are super-fun and have a lot of great potential.
“We really do see families and parents as partners, so thank you for all you do to make your kid great!”
Media trucks were parked outside the club yesterday, generating stares from kids inside and from parents as they arrived to pick up their children. Many were hearing about the alleged attack for the first time.
“My kid loves it here,” said one parent who arrived at the club to pick up her son, but declined to give her name. “I feel safe knowing that he’s here, so yes, I am surprised to hear this.”
Another parent said he thought the staff does a good job of managing the kids.
“They have a lot to deal with, and I think they do tremendous work day in and day out,” he said. “It’s like any place — you’re going to have things that happen that you can’t control. I look at how they handled it, and I think they’re handling it well.”
Conley’s office said the suspect’s next court date will be June 5.
