Keuchel remains hot, Astros topple Indians

-

Dallas Keuchel pitched a complete game to extend his promising start to the season and the Houston Astros beat the Indians, 4-2, in American League action last night in Cleveland even though Jose Altuve and Teoscar Hernandez left following a frightening collision in the eighth inning.

Altuve and Hernandez were chasing a popup in right field and stayed down for a while after the crash. Altuve appeared to get hit near his chin by Hernandez’ arm, but he walked off the field under his own power. Hernandez, called up from the minors before the game, was carted off the field with an injury to his left leg.

Keuchel (4-0) gave up solo homers to Austin Jackson in the third and Michael Brantley in the ninth. The left-hander, who won the AL Cy Young Award in 2015, held Cleveland to six hits and has a 1.22 ERA.

Rays 2, Orioles 0 — Substitute starter Austin Pruitt combined with four other Tampa Bay relievers on a two-hitter as it capitalized on Wade Miley’s wildness in a win over host Baltimore.

Twins 8, Rangers 1 — In Arlington, Texas, Ervin Santana delivered his fourth straight outstanding start, Miguel Sano sparked a seven-run fifth inning with a leadoff homer and Minnesota pounded Texas.

Tigers 19, Mariners 9 — James McCann, Justin Upton and Alex Avila homered for host Detroit — and that was before it added nine runs in the fifth inning en route to a rout of Seattle. Felix Hernandez went two innings in his shortest outing since 2015.

White Sox 10, Royals 5 — Todd Frazier drove in three runs, Leury Garcia had three hits and host Chicago beat Kansas City.

Angels 2, Athletics 1 — In Anaheim, Calif., Kole Calhoun drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th and Los Angeles, which rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th, pulled out the victory against Oakland.

National League

Dodgers 2, Giants 1— Clayton Kershaw struck out seven over seven innings in another impressive performance in San Francisco’s home ballpark, and Los Angeles ended a fourgame losing streak against its rival.

Giants ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner will not require surgery on his sprained pitching shoulder and is scheduled to begin light rehabilitation activities in four or five days.

Nationals 15, Rockies 12 — Trea Turner hit for the third cycle in franchise history and had seven RBI and Washington held off a big Colorado comeback on a cold night in Denver.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 — Kyle Hendricks rediscovered his 2016 form, limiting host Pittsburgh to four hits over six innings to outduel Gerrit Cole and lead Chicago to a win.

Brewers 9, Reds 1— Eric Thames hit his major league-leading 11th home run — his eighth against Cincinnati — and host Milwaukee cruised to a win.

Diamondbacks 9, Padres 3— In Phoenix, Paul Goldschmidt drove in three runs to match a team record with his fourth straight multi-RBI game, Patrick Corbin struck out nine in seven innings and Arizona rolled over San Diego.

Marlins-Phillies, ppd. — Rain postponed Miami game at Philadelphia. The teams did not announce a makeup date.

Braves-Mets, ppd. — The series opener between Atlanta and host New York was postponed by rain. The game was rescheduled as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Sept. 25.

Interleague

Blue Jays 6, Cardinals 5— Chris Coghlan made an acrobatic, run-scoring leap over St. Louis All-Star catcher Yadier Molina, and Marcus Stroman came across with the go-ahead run after pinch hitting in the 11th inning and doubling for his first major league hit in visiting Toronto’s victory.

Elsewhere in baseball — Multiple groups have submitted bids to buy the Marlins, and none has yet been accepted, baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said yesterday. His comments came after Bloomberg reported a group led by former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush won an auction for the team with a $1.3 billion bid.

Completion of any sale by Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria could take months and would require approval by at least 75 percent of the major league teams.
