Cahill, Medfield roll in Lerch lax game

- By GREG DUDEK

For most of the first half, Jack Cahill was held in check.

With just a lone tally at the break, the Medfield senior midfielder broke through in the second half, finishing with three goals and four assists to guide the Warriors to a 14-8 TriValley League win over DoverSherborn yesterday at a rainy Calvin George Fisher Field.

“I didn’t come out at hot as I would have liked,” Cahill said. “The D-S goalie (Ross Barnard) was playing on his absolute head. It was quite frustrating, but I just tried to keep my head in the game and keep the ball moving and just get my shots off and everybody else got their shots off. It really opened it up in the second half.”

Medfield went in front, 5-4, on a tally from Cahill less than a minute into the third quarter.

Mark Nevins (three goals) followed with another goal and Cahill set up two more before Michael Mastrobuono (four goals) got one back for D-S (73) to have the Raiders trail, 8-6, going into the final 12 minutes.

Medfield (6-1) pulled away late as Cahill assisted on a goal from Kyle Keegan to start a string of five unanswered goals to begin the fourth quarter.

The game between TVL rivals was also the Bruce Lerch Game of the Month, dedicated to the late Herald sports reporter.

Medfield coach John Isaf attributed the growth of lacrosse over the past 10 years to the work Lerch did promoting the sport.

“He did so much for Massachusetts high school lacrosse and these (student-athletes) promoting them,” Isaf said. “I miss him. . . . Bruce is just a lover of the kids, lover of the game and he promoted all of us. Not just Medfield or the big programs, he was at all these games on the sidelines.”

Isaf added that the Friends of Medfield Lacrosse will make a donation to The Bruce Fund since no admission was charged.

In the Merrimack Valley Conference, Nate Driscoll scored four goals and Central Catholic (4-3) beat Tewksbury, 12-9.

Joe Lattanzi and Alex Winch each had three goals and two assists as Hamilton-Wenham (8-0) routed Manchester-Essex 17-7 in the Cape Ann League.

Girls lacrosse

Coley Hayes scored three times to lead Norwood (2-4) to an 8-7 win over Weymouth in the Bay State Conference.

Caitlin Chizoski and Maddy Balter notched hat tricks for Wellesley (6-3) in a 14-4 win over Brookline. . . . Alexis Catsoolis and Hanna McMahon combined for 10 goals as Watertown (4-2) edged Burlington 14-11 in the Middlesex League.
