Cops: Trooper hurt as repeat drunk driver hits cruiser

A repeat drunken driver smashed into a state police cruiser last night, sending the trooper to the hospital, state police said.

The crash happened on Interstate 495 southbound in Methuen near Exit 45 while the trooper was preparing for a road constructi­on detail about 8 p.m. The trooper, whose name was not released, was taken to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen with minor injuries, state police said. The driver, Joseph Doiron, 59, of North Andover, was charged with drunk driving fourth offense, operating to endanger, marked lanes violation, open container of alcohol in vehicle, and speeding.

Doiron was hospitaliz­ed at Lawrence General Hospital with minor injuries, state police said.

Doiron is expected to be arraigned in Lawrence District Court today.
