Leaf blower brouhaha
My town, Belmont, doesn’t have a leaf-blower ban, at least not yet (“Tempers rise as Newton puts summer-long ban on loud landscaping tool,” April 27). But I stopped our own landscaper from using one, and he has not raised his rates.
One spring a few years ago, a fellow with a leaf blower blew down several hundred daffodils. I had always hated the noise, but the broken daffodils were the last straw.
I told the landscaper to use a rake on the grass and a broom on the pavement — and to let the leaves that fall on the garden turn into mulch. Now if only all my neighbors would do the same.
