When the schedule came out prior to the season, it was an easy pick for what game the Duxbury boys lacrosse team would highlight. After all, Patriot League rival

Hingham defeated the Dragons for the first time since 1999 a year ago.

Duxbury avenged that loss to the Harbormen yesterday, as three unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter was the difference for the Dragons in an 8-6 road win.

“We’ve had some big games already, but this is the most meaningful one,” said senior captain Bobby Maimaron, who netted a hat trick. “No matter the size of the game, this is the most meaningful one to everyone. You really saw everyone give everything tonight.”

Neither side gained much separation through the first three quarters until Duxbury (8-2) took its play up a notch to begin the fourth.

Riley Bergstrom (goal, three assists) found Maimaron, who cut from behind the net to the edge of the crease to break a 5-5 deadlock just 40 seconds into the final quarter.

Then Bergstrom did it himself, notching a goal just over two minutes later for a 7-5 lead. Bergstrom kept it going, helping Duxbury to its largest lead of the game by connecting with Joe Gooley, who deposited his shot for an 8-5 advantage with 5:47 left.

Hingham (10-3) got a goal back on a tally from Marshall Terres, but solid defense from Duxbury plus a stellar outing in net from Henry Weld made the lead stand up.

Even though Duxbury and Hingham are archrivals, the two sides came together to play in the honor of Bruce Lerch, the late Herald sports reporter.

“We just love the guy,” said Duxbury coach Chris Sweet. “We miss him. Whatever we can to do to honor his memory, we will. And to come out here, two really good teams playing a great game, I think there’s no better way to honor Bruce.”

Part of the proceeds from admission sales will be donated to the Bruce Lerch Memorial Fund.

In nonleague action, Jake Zeuli tossed a complete game, surrendering one earned run to guide Peabody (9-4) past Xaverian, 7-2.
