A beloved Braintree cop, U.S. Marine Corps veteran and “devoted and loving” son is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the head Friday night, officials say.

Officer Donald Delaney, 36, who joined the Braintree Police Department in 2010, underwent surgery at Boston Medical Center yesterday as doctors tried to remove the bullet that was lodged in his head, District Attorney Michael Morrissey said. He is expected to survive.

Braintree Mayor Joseph Sullivan hailed Delaney as an “excellent police officer” who has “performed well on a regular basis in a very admirable way.”

Delaney, who was described as a “devoted and loving” son in his mother’s obituary, was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, often volunteered in the community and was the recipient of two awards for lifesaving acts in his time with the department. He was among eight Braintree cops who helped save the life of a 21-year-old woman who was found unresponsive in a Hampton Inn hotel room in 2014, according to published reports.

“He’s well thought of by his colleagues, he’s a good, solid police officer and a well-trained Marine Corps veteran,” Morrissey said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and for a speedy recovery and a return to work.”

Calls to Delaney’s family members were not returned last night.

Delaney was shot in the head about 9:30 p.m., while he and three other officers tried to serve Tizaya Jordan Robinson, 25, of Boston, with a restraining order at the Motel 6 on Union Street, Morrissey said. Robinson, who police say fired at the officers through his hotel room door, suffered numerous gunshot wounds when the officers returned fire and was found early yesterday morning with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
