Wieters burns O’s, leads Nats to victory

Matt Wieters hit a winning, two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning against his former team, and the Nationals rallied to beat Baltimore, 7-6, and end the Orioles’ six-game winning streak last night in an interleagu­e matchup in Washington.

Washington trailed 6-2 in the seventh before coming back. Down by two in the ninth, the Nationals rallied against Brad Brach (0-1), serving as Baltimore’s closer while Zach Britton is on the disabled list.

Jayson Werth led off the ninth with a homer, and Bryce Harper doubled. With one out, an intentiona­l walk and a single loaded the bases for Wieters, who hit a liner to right. Wieters signed with Washington in February following an eightyear run with Baltimore.

Matt Albers (2-0) — another former Oriole — struck out three straight batters for the win.

Mariners 11, Phillies 6 — Carlos Ruiz hit a three-run double against his old team, Robinson Cano and Danny Valencia homered and visiting Seattle beat Philadelph­ia.

Aaron Altherr hit two homers and Tommy Joseph also went deep for the Phillies, who have lost 10-of-12.

Astros 4, Braves 2 — Carlos Correa had two doubles and two RBI to help host Houston to a win over Atlanta for the best 34-game start in franchise history.

Rangers 4, Padres 3 — In Arlington, Texas, Delino DeShields scored the tiebreakin­g run on a throwing error in the seventh, two innings after going home on a balk, and Texas beat San Diego.

Diamondbac­ks 7, Tigers 1 — In Phoenix, Zack Godley allowed four hits in seven innings after being called up from Triple-A in time to make his second start of the season, and Arizona beat Detroit to end a three-game losing streak.

American League

Blue Jays 8, Indians 7 — Ryan Goins singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and host Toronto rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Cleveland.

Jose Bautista hit a threerun home run and Ezequiel Carrera added a tying, tworun drive for the Blue Jays, who won consecutiv­e series for the first time this season.

Athletics 3, Angels 1 — Andrew Triggs (5-2) overcame a shaky start to pitch six innings, Chad Pinder homered and host Oakland held on to beat Los Angeles.

Rays 12, Royals 1 — Chris Archer pitched eight shutout innings and Logan Morrison, Rickie Weeks Jr. and Colby Rasmus homered for Tampa Bay in a rout of Kansas City in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Archer (3-1) won for the first time in five starts by scattering five singles.

Twins-White Sox, ppd. — The Minnesota at Chicago game was postponed by rain and will be made up as part of an Aug. 21 doublehead­er.

National League

Rockies 3, Cubs 0 — In Denver, German Marquez allowed three hits over eight innings and got his first major league hit with a two-run single in the seventh to lead Colorado over Chicago.

Marquez (1-2) had a nohit bid going until Kris Bryant’s double leading off the seventh inning. He walked Kyle Schwarber in the first and retired 16 straight before Bryant’s hit to left.

Giants 6, Mets 5 — Christian Arroyo broke a ninthinnin­g tie with a three-run double and visiting San Francisco took advantage of a critical error by third baseman Wilmer Flores to rally past New York and stop a five-game losing streak.

Cardinals 7, Marlins 5 — Dexter Fowler hit a pinchhit, go-ahead triple and visiting St. Louis overcame a four-run deficit for the second game in a row, rallying past Miami to complete a 6-0 road trip.

Dodgers 5, Pirates 2 — Cody Bellinger hit a tworun home run, Chase Utley drove in a pair of runs and host Los Angeles held off Pittsburgh.
