Cops: Suspect in chase stole cruiser

- By LAUREL J. SWEET

A Plymouth man stole a marked police cruiser early yesterday morning in a botched attempt to flee arrest after a wild, high-speed chase, Hanson police said.

Cops say it all started about 1 a.m., when Hanson officers spotted a 2010 Chevy Malibu racing north on Route 58. When the driver blew through a stop sign, police say officers gave chase. Police say the driver, later identified as Daniel Egan, tried to force a Hanson cop off the road before his getaway was brought to a screeching halt in Halifax after officers used tire deflation devices to slow his escape.

But police say Egan, 36, didn’t give up and fled on foot into the woods with officers close behind.

After a brief chase in the woods, police said Egan managed to jump into a parked police cruiser and briefly escape.

“Officers from Hanson, Halifax and Pembroke attempted to stop Egan as he fled in the cruiser on Route 58 south,” police said yesterday. “Plympton police officers deployed tire deflation devices on Route 58 and disabled the cruiser.”

And though his escape in the cruiser lasted just minutes, authorities said the ensuing standoff stretched on for 20 minutes.

“Efforts to convince Mr. Egan to exit the vehicle were unsuccessful,” police said. “Officers used bean bag rounds to shoot out the windows of the cruiser. Mr. Egan eventually exited the vehicle and again refused commands to surrender. A K9 from the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office was used to subdue Mr. Egan.”

Egan is facing charges including assault and battery, failure to stop for a police officer and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident.
