NFL won’t reinstate Gordon

Josh Gordon won’t be back in the NFL anytime soon.

A person with knowledge of the decision tells The Associated Press that the Cleveland Browns wide receiver has been denied reinstatem­ent by the NFL. The person, speaking yesterday on condition of anonymity because the decision has not been announced publicly, says Gordon can reapply for reinstatem­ent in the fall.

Gordon has been suspended several times by the league, including the current ban for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He also was suspended for 10 games in 2014, then for the 2015 season, all for substance abuse violations. . . .

The Arizona Cardinals officially announced the signing of quarterbac­k Blaine Gabbert to a one-year contract. Gabbert presumably will compete for the backup job behind 37-year-old starter Carson Palmer but for now is the No. 3 quarterbac­k on the roster.

In other Cardinals news, Arizona released linebacker Daryl Washington, who had been reinstated by the NFL after three seasons away from the game. . . .

A man has filed a federal lawsuit alleging Titans wide receiver Tajae

Sharpe assaulted him in an alley behind a bar the first night of the NFL draft upset at comments made about Sharpe’s job security with the team.

Dante R. Satterfiel­d is asking for at least $500,000 in damages in the lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court.

Canada rallies past France

Canada rallied to beat France 3-2 in the world hockey championsh­ip, breaking a tie early in the third period when the puck deflected past goalie Florian Hardy off French teammate Jonathan Janil in Paris.

Bidding for a third straight world title and a record-equaling 27th overall, Canada leads Group B with 12 points.

In Group A in Cologne, Germany, Russia scored three goals in a 1:10 span in the second period in a 3-0 victory over Denmark.

ManU, Ajax in Europa final

Manchester United and Ajax advanced to the Europa League final, bringing together two of the continent’s grandest soccer clubs looking to regain their former luster in the May 24 showpiece in Stockholm. . . .

Andy Murray’s struggles continued with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Borna Coric in the third round of the Madrid Open. Defending champion Novak Djokovic and four-time champion Rafael Nadal made it to the quarterfin­als. . . .

Three suspended Illinois football players have been charged with burglary and aggravated robbery charges after what they say was a prank on a fellow dormitory resident in Champaign, Ill. Darta L. Lee,

Howard E. Watkins and Zarrian J. Holcombe were charged with felony residentia­l burglary and aggravated robbery.
