No lock Warriors stay on roll

-

The Golden State Warriors’ rare unbeaten start this postseason doesn’t necessarily mean they’re on their way to a title.

Golden State is just the fifth NBA team to win its first 10 playoff games in a given postseason. Only two of the four teams that previously achieved the feat went on to win the title. The 2000-01 Los Angeles Lakers started 11-0 and dropped just one game in the Finals before dispatching Philadelphia. The 2015-16 Cleveland Cavaliers started 10-0 and, despite falling behind Golden State, 3-1, in the Finals, the Cavs denied the Warriors of a repeat title.

The Warriors aren’t getting caught up in talk about where they might rank in history if they continue this run. They say they’re focusing on the next game against the Spurs in the Western Conference finals Saturday night in San Antonio.

“We feel like we like our chances against anybody, no matter (who) is on the court,” Warriors forward Kevin Durant said Tuesday night after a 136-100 victory over the Spurs, who played without injured All-Star forward Kawhi Leonard. “That’s the confidence we have. But we’ve got to be ready for Game 3. We know they’re probably going to be full strength in Game 3 and ready to play us.

While Steve Kerr isn’t expected to coach the Warriors from the sidelines in Games 3 and 4, he will be making the trip to San Antonio, according to GM Bob Myers. Kerr has been battling complications from 2015 back surgery, and took a leave of absence after Game 2 of the Warriors’ first-round series against Portland.

In San Antonio, he’ll presumably join the coaches in meetings, the players in practices and the team at the arena for Game 3 and 4, likely staying in the back during game action.

In his absence, Mike Brown will continue to coach the team.
