Needham gains revenge with L-S

SCHOOLS

After suffering a late regular-season loss to LincolnSud­bury a year ago, Needham took advantage of its shot at redemption last night.

Scoring three goals in the first three minutes, the Rockets cruised to an 11-6 win over the Warriors in nonleague girls lacrosse action.

“We wanted to come out and show them the team that we are,” said Needham senior Gabby Walsh.

Maeve Barker got the game going with a goal just 14 seconds in. Sarah Conley followed just over a minute later with her first of four goals, and Jessie Hem concluded the early flurry.

After L-S (8-9) scored twice, Callie Hem capped a 5-0 run to send the Rockets (17-3) into the half with a 7-2 lead.

Walsh, Barker and Conley scored early in the second half and Needham coasted from there.

Boys lacrosse

In a Middlesex League matchup, Mike Calvert scored five goals and added two assists for Melrose (10-5) in a 13-11 win over Burlington.

Matt Farwell netted a hat trick for Reading (15-2) in a 13-7 nonleague win over Beverly.

Baseball

Jake Noviello tossed a shutout as Franklin (15-5) captured the Hockomock League Kelley-Rex Division title with a 5-0 win over King Philip.

Norton (14-5) clinched a Tri-Valley League title as Jay Morris threw a complete game and struck out seven in a 3-2 win over Westwood.

Chris Phieffer collected three hits and two RBI to lead Bridgewate­r-Raynham (12-6) past New Bedford, 8-2, in nonleague action.

Softball

Guiliana Kehayais hit a walkoff double to lift Boston Latin (6-11) over Westford Academy, 6-5, in Dual County League action.

Cassidy Gaeta belted two home runs to power North Reading (16-1) to an 11-9 victory over Triton in Cape Ann League play.
