Vettel to the metal for Monaco win

-

Sebastian Vettel beat his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen to win the Monaco Grand Prix yesterday and comfortably extend his lead at the top of the Formula 1 standings to 25 points in Monaco.

It was the four-time champion’s third win of the season and 45th of his career, as well as Ferrari’s first in Monaco since Michael Schumacher, Vettel’s childhood idol, in 2001.

“Unbelievable. It was a very tense race,” Vettel said. “It’s very, very special to win here. We’re going to have a very fun night.”

Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo finished third, ahead of Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas.

Arena names roster

Coach Bruce Arena has called in a mixture of veterans and young players for the U.S. soccer team’s training camp in Denver heading into a tuneup match against Venezuela and two World Cup qualifiers.

Missing from the 27-man roster is Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Jermaine Jones, who is bothered by a sprained right knee. Jones might not fit Arena’s plans as Michael Bradley is used in more of a defensive midfield role that Jones has filled.

Tim Howard, Brad Guzan and Nick Rimando, fixtures guarding the net, were chosen by Arena along with 21-year-old Ethan Horvath of Club Brugge in Belgium. Other mainstays called in included Bradley, Alejandro Bedoya and Dax McCarthy in midfield; Clint Dempsey and Jozy Altidore at forward; and defenders DaMarcus Beasley, Geoff Cameron, Fabian Johnson and Timmy Chandler.

The Americans play Venezuela on Saturday, then have qualifiers against Trinidad and Tobago on June 8 and at Mexico three days later. . . .

Dumoulin takes 1st

Tom Dumoulin won cycling’s 100th Giro d’Italia in dramatic fashion, reclaiming the overall lead in a final-stage individual time trial in Milan. It’s the first Grand Tour victory for Dumoulin, a Dutchman with Team Sunweb, and it sets him up as a potential rival for three-time Tour de France champion Chris Froome. Dumoulin entered the final stage in fourth position but finished far enough ahead of his rivals over the flat 29-kilometer (18-mile) route from Monza’s Formula One race track to Milan’s cathedral to move back into the lead.

In the overall standings, Dumoulin finished 31 seconds ahead of 2014 champion Nairo Quintana of Colombia and 40 seconds ahead of last year’s winner, Vincenzo Nibali of Italy.
