Walsh hurls Latin Academy to City title

When Latin Academy’s Conor Walsh found out he was going to be taking the mound for the Boston City League championsh­ip against East Boston, the senior had only one thing on his mind: Payback.

After shaking off a rough first inning, Walsh was lights out, going the distance while striking out nine to deliver the Dragons their first City League title since 2004 with a 9-5 victory at Roberts Playground in Dorchester.

“My team was really behind me after the first inning,” Walsh said. “They told me to pick my head up and just pitch the way I normally can.”

Looking to avenge a loss to East Boston in last year’s City semifinals, the Dragons appeared as though they would come up short again when the fell behind 4-0 after one inning.

Shane Lake opened the bottom of the fourth for Latin Academy by reaching on an error, and he scored on an infield hit by Ryan Lonergan.

Later in the fourth, Aidan Rivera-Castro stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and roped a bases-clearing triple down the right field line to give the Dragons a 5-4 lead. Latin Academy scored seven runs total in the inning.

East Boston was led by Josue Baez, who cranked a home run to make it 7-5 in the fifth. Joe Serpa also contribute­d for the Jets, picking up two hits and two RBI.

Lynnfield (18-2) added to its case to be included in the Super Eight field with a 3-1 victory against Reading (15-5). Senior Justin Juliano got the win with a complete game effort, allowing just four hits, and senior Michael Federico knocked in a pair of runs.

Anthony Bianchi, Madison Dina and Josh Savitz combined to throw a no-hitter as Lexington (16-6) crushed Barnstable, 15-0, in a nonleague matchup. . . . Drew LeBlanc had three hits and five RBI to lead Dighton-Rehoboth (16-4) to a 16-4 win over Somerset-Berkley. ... Dylan Sheedy pitched a complete game and struck out seven to power Apponequet (12-8) past Bishop Stang 3-2. ... Xaverian (13-7) beat Rhode Island’s Bishop Hendricken, 7-3, behind two doubles and two RBI from Vicente Mendoza.

Acton-Boxboro (12-7) beat Waltham, 2-1, in a Dual County Large clash thanks to a completega­me effort from Brian Quantrille.

Softball

Rebecca Walker went 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead Lynn Classical (15-3) to a 7-1 victory against Lynn English in the John Holland Tournament.

Katie Italiano and Nystasia Rowe each went 3-for-5 and drove in a pair of runs to lead Saugus (119) to a 7-5 win over Stoneham in nonleague play.

Alexandra Santostefa­no had three hits and drove in two runs as Austin Prep (17-2) beat Bishop Fenwick, 14-0, in five innings in the Catholic Central League.

Lauren Keleher was 4-for-5 with five RBI to power Abington (22-0) to an 18-5 win against Middleboro in a South Shore League matchup.

Kate Wilmot threw a one-hitter and also drove in two runs to lead Walpole (16-5) to a 3-1 victory against Braintree in the Bay State Conference.

Girls lacrosse

Catherine McKenna scored seven goals to lead Shawsheen (11-6) to a 12-7 win against Old Colony in the Voke Tournament championsh­ip game.
