Mueller tells grads to act with ‘honesty, integrity’

- By DAN ATKINSON

Former FBI director Robert S. Mueller yesterday told the graduates of a Massachusetts private school to act with “honesty and integrity” in an address that drew national media, but never alluded to his position leading the investigation into alleged Trump campaign ties to the Russian government.

“Whatever we do, we must act with honesty and integrity. Regardless of your chosen career, you’re only as good as your word,” Mueller told 133 graduates — including his granddaughter — and their families at Tabor Academy in Marion.

“You can be smart, aggressive, articulate and indeed persuasive, but if you are not honest, your reputation will suffer and once lost, a good reputation can never ever be regained,” Mueller said. “If you have integrity, nothing else matters — and if you do not have integrity, nothing else matters.”

Mueller served as director of the FBI from 2001 to 2013 and previously worked as acting U.S. Attorney in Boston in 1987. In a move that sent shockwaves through Washington, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein tapped Mueller to serve as special counsel for the investigation of President Trump’s campaign ties after Trump fired FBI Director James B. Comey earlier this month.

Yesterday, the words “Trump” and “Russia” were never mentioned.

Mueller told graduates to have patience and be humble.

And he told graduates to find a calling that would let them serve their country in any way that they can.

“You’ll find the way in which you choose to serve is not that important, only that you work to better your country and community,” Mueller said. “Each of you must determine which way you can best serve others, a way that will leave you believing that your time was time well-spent.”
