Jays just May be contenders

Devon Travis hit a tiebreakin­g two-run home run in the seventh inning, Luke Maile also hit a two-run shot and the Blue Jays beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, yesterday in interleagu­e action in Toronto to wrap up a three-game sweep.

Jason Grilli (2-4) pitched one inning out of the bullpen for the victory as the Blue Jays won for the eighth time in nine games and finished May at 18-10. After winning eight of their final nine games in May, the Blue Jays welcome the AL Eastleadin­g New York Yankees for a four-game series starting tonight.

Joe Smith worked the eighth and Roberto Osuna survived a shaky ninth for his 11th save.

Mariners 5, Rockies 0 — James Paxton and three relievers combined on a fourhitter to help host Seattle beat Colorado.

Angels 2, Braves 1 — In Anaheim, Calif., Eric Young Jr. hit a solo home run in the eighth inning, providing Los Angeles a three-game series sweep of Atlanta.

American League

Orioles 10, Yankees 4 — Adam Jones homered and drove in five runs, Chris Davis added a two-run shot and Baltimore beat Masahiro Tanaka (5-5) and New York to take 2-of-3 in the series after coming in with a seven-game losing streak.

Before the game, the Orioles placed catcher Welington Castillo on the 10-day disabled list with a testicular injury.

Astros 17, Twins 6— In Minneapoli­s, George Springer reached base in all six plate appearance­s and hit two of his team’s six home runs — Carlos Correa, Alex Bregman, Evan Gattis and Marwin Gonzalez also went deep —to lead Houston to a seventh straight win, against Minnesota.

Athletics 3, Indians 1 — Sean Manaea (4-3) allowed three hits in seven innings and No. 9 hitter Chad Pinder homered twice and drove in all three of his team’s runs, as Oakland topped host Cleveland.

Tigers 6, Royals 5 — J.D. Martinez and Justin Upton hit two-run doubles with two outs in the third inning as visiting Detroit held off Kansas City.

Rays 7, Rangers 5 — In Arlington, Texas, Logan Morrison and Derek Norris homered in a three-run 10th inning to cap a late Tampa Bay comeback to beat Texas.

National League

Nationals 3, Giants 1— Max Scherzer pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out 11 and visiting Washington swept San Francisco.

Bryce Harper agreed to drop his appeal of a fourgame suspension stemming from a Monday fight in San Francisco and the Washington Nationals right fielder had one game shaved from the punishment. There was no word on the status of Giants reliever Hunter Strickland’s six-game ban.

Padres 2, Cubs 1— Franchy Cordero tripled in the eighth inning and scored on Yangervis Solarte’s fielder’s choice, and host San Diego completed a series sweep of Chicago, which has lost six straight.

Marlins 10, Phillies 2 — Justin Bour hit two home runs, Marcell Ozuna also went deep and Miami notched his first series sweep of the season by pounding Philadelph­ia.

Diamondbac­ks 6, Pirates 5— Chris Owings singled home the go-ahead run in the 14th inning and Arizona, which led in the ninth and 11th, outlasted host Pittsburgh.

Brewers 7, Mets 1 — Eric Thames and Keon Broxton homered, and Junior Guerra (1-0) allowed four hits in six scoreless innings, helping visiting Milwaukee beat New York.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1 — Dexter Fowler hit tiebreakin­g homer in the eighth inning to back Carlos Martinez (4-4) and give host St. Louis the win against Los Angeles.
