Flyers net upset in volleyball

- By GREG DUDEK David Pollard, Marcello Rossetti and Brendan Connelly contributed to this report.

The target is on the back of reigning state champion

Framingham, but the Flyers continue to rise to the occasion and are still standing to defend their title.

In the Central quarterfinals yesterday, No. 7 Framingham turned in a team effort to dispatch secondseeded Millis, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17, at Bellingham High School.

“These kids, they’re working really hard,” said Framingham coach Emily Viti as the Flyers advance to the semifinals to face No. 11 Natick. “This is what they want to do. We just want to practice one more day. We want to play another game.”

Jack DiConza (10 kills) and Paul Galins (seven kills) got Framingham (13-5) off to a fast start with their strong net presence. But Carter Burruss sparked Millis (18-3) with his overall steady play in the second set and had the Mohawks leading, 14-11, midway through the frame.

Swaroop Jayarama’s serving settled down Framingham, though, and gave it a boost to come from behind to take the set on a spike from Eric Tarlin (seven kills). A 14-2 run midway through the third game was all the Flyers needed to put Millis away.

Jeff Hunt dished out 23 assists, and also finished with eight aces, as No. 1 Andover (21-1) swept No. 8

Lexington, 3-0, in a North quarterfinal.
