BC High boys tennis sweeps KP

BC High’s run through the Div. 1 South tournament continues to prove there is no “I” in boys tennis.

The fourth-seeded Eagles, coming off a 5-0 first-round win against Plymouth North, maintained their momentum yesterday with a 5-0 quarterfin­al sweep of No. 5 King Philip on the indoor courts at the Weymouth Club.

BC High (15-3) will play the winner of today’s WellesleyB­arnstable match in the semis.

“It is all about playing together, pulling for one another and being mentally tough,” BC High coach Lance Hutchinson said. “You need to play your game, but from time to time, you need to pick up your teammates.”

Facing a talented King Philip squad, the Eagles grabbed a quick 2-0 lead behind the play of their doubles teams. At No. 1 doubles, Adam Guard and Alex Lazowski won 6-0, 6-0 against Ryan Gemelli and Sam Colella, while at No.2, Nick Bridgeman and Pete Golden dispatched Aidan Ignatius and Marco DiStefano, 6-4 and 6-3.

“(Guard and Lazowski) may be the best doubles pairing we’ve had in the last 10 years, but both of our doubles teams are playing so well,” Hutchinson said.

Needing just one win from their three singles matches to advance, senior captain Aidan Dale put the Eagles over the top with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Blake Ginter in the No. 2 spot.

BC High finished off the sweep when T.J. Jala rallied at No. 1 singles to defeat Cole Ginter 4-6, 6-4 (11-9), and Michael Bridgeman held off Martin Matous at No. 3 2-6, 6-3 (10-6).

Girls tennis

Courtney Carroll and Grace Sullivan earned singles victories, and the No. 2 doubles team of Kat Lombardo and Allison Carroll earned the third point as No. 4 Plymouth South (18-3) defeated No. 13 Barnstable, 3-2, in a Div. 1 South first-round match.

Sixth-seeded Duxbury (16-4) beat third-seeded Apponequet, 3-2, in a Div. 2 South quarterfin­al. The Dragons swept doubles, getting wins from the teams of Makenna Hadley and Annie Gardner as well as Anniek van Aarem and Paige Withington, while Rachel Melampy earned the third point at third singles.

Softball

Mia Nowicki struck out 16 as No. 3 St. Mary’s (20-2) advanced to the Div. 3 North semifinals with a 3-1 win against No. 6 Lowell Catholic.

Maria Giordani’s sacrifice fly to right capped a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as No. 4 Marshfield (16-3) edged 20thseeded Mansfield, 4-3, in a Div. 1 South first-round contest. . . . In a quarterfin­al matchup, Maggie Farrell was 2-for-4 with a double and a grand slam, racking up six RBI as No. 2 Milford (21-1) crushed No. 10 Norwood (15-6), 17-1.

Jamie Babineau was 4-for-4, driving in four runs and scoring three times to lift No. 12 Billerica (14-9) to a 9-2 win against No. 13 Haverhill (13-9).

Herald All-Scholastic pitcher Kelly Nelson of Norton was selected the 2016-17 Gatorade Massachuse­tts Softball Player of the Year. Nelson is the first Norton softball player to win the award. The 5-foot-11 junior right-hander guided led the Lancers to a 21-1 record at the time of her selection. She’s 17-1 with a 0.11 ERA, 310 strikeouts and five perfect games.

Boys lacrosse

Hunter Gregory and Jack Dillon registered hat tricks in the first half as No. 1 Dover-Sherborn (16-4) advanced to the Div. 3 Central/ final with a 16-4 rout of No. 4 Tyngsboro.

Girls lacrosse

Julia Glavin scored three quick goals to give Ipswich an early lead against No. 2 Marblehead, and the third-seeded Tigers never looked back in a 12-8 win in the Div. 2 North final in Wilmington.

“Julia’s a captain and a leader on the field,” Tigers coach Kerri O’Connor said. “She’s just a real team player. Even though her goals are high, her assists are also high.”

Glavin, who finished with six goals, scored the first two of the game then the first two of the second half for the Tigers (18-1).

Eva Ciffolilo scored five goals as No. 5 Old Rochester (18-2) eliminated fourth-seeded Falmouth, 20-9, in a Div. 2 South quarterfin­al. . . . Jane Hansen and Julia Placek had four goals apiece as No. 1 Cohasset (172) cruised past No. 8 Scituate, 21-6.

In a Div. 1 South quarterfin­al, Maddy Balter scored five times as No. 5 Wellesley (15-5) edged No. 4 Braintree, 12-10.
