JAN. 6: Comey meets then-President-elect Trump for the first time in a conference room of Trump Tower for a briefing about Russian efforts to hack the election. Without Trump asking directly, Comey assures him the FBI is not investigating him personally. Comey feels compelled to start keeping written memos of his conversations with Trump.

JAN. 27: Trump invites Comey to dinner — alone — in the Green Room of the White House, where the president asks him if he wants to stay on as FBI director. Comey believes this is an attempt by Trump to create a patronage relationship. Trump informs Comey “I need loyalty, I expect loyalty.” Later, Trump again tells Comey: “I need loyalty.” Comey says he will pledge his “honest loyalty” to Trump.

FEB. 14: Trump asks Comey to stay behind after a counterterrorism briefing where he begins: “I want to talk about Mike Flynn” — Trump's national security adviser who has been fired the day before. Trump calls Flynn “a good guy” who “has been through a lot.” Trump then pleads: “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go.” Comey agrees Flynn is “a good guy” but refuses to drop the probe.

MARCH 30: In a phone call to Comey, Trump repeatedly refers to the Russia investigation as a “cloud” and asks Comey what could be done to “lift the cloud.” Comey tells Trump the FBI was investigating as quickly as it could.

APRIL 11: Again, Trump calls Comey complaining that “the cloud” was getting in the way of the president's job and asks Comey what he's done to “get out” that he's not under personal investigation. Comey says he has passed Trump's earlier request on to the acting deputy attorney general but hasn't heard back yet. Trump then tells Comey: “I have been very loyal to you, very loyal; we had that thing you know.” Comey did not ask Trump what he meant by “that thing.” It's the last time the two would speak.

MAY 9: Trump abruptly fires Comey.
