Come y’ s mired in the mud he’ s slinging

- JOE BATTENFELD — joe.battenfeld@bostonherald.com

So after all this, the big news is Donald Trump is a liar?

Call the cops. Stop the presses.

Former FBI Director James Comey definitely threw a lot of mud around — including on himself — during nearly three hours of congressional testimony, but failed to deliver a decisive blow to President Trump.

Calling Trump a liar may have been good political theater, but it’s hardly an indictment. If lying to the media and public was a crime, every president in modern times would have landed in jail.

And we pretty much all know by now that Trump doesn’t always tell the truth, don’t we? He was a New York real estate mogul and a reality television star. Duh.

There were a few bombshells yesterday, but not directed at Trump. We learned that, according to Comey, former AG Loretta Lynch used political pressure to get him to downplay the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. And we learned Comey himself is a big leaker.

This shouldn’t be shocking since Comey is the ultimate slick Washington insider, seemingly more concerned with keeping his own job than protecting the public interest. If he really believed Trump was trying to get him to drop the investigation into Michael Flynn, he should have confronted Trump or just quit. But he didn’t. He kept on working and reporting to the president.

Comey is no profile in courage. He not only didn’t stand up to Trump, he caved in to Lynch’s request not to use the word “investigation” in talking about the Clinton email probe. He went ahead and used the word “matter” instead, even though he says it made him “queasy.” And he resisted calling for a special prosecutor, just as the Clinton campaign wanted.

Comey yesterday also kept saying he was “confused” about things. Confused about his conversations with Trump, and confused about the request from Lynch.

Please. Comey wasn’t confused. He’s a veteran Washington hand and knows exactly what Lynch and Trump were talking about.

Comey under oath repeatedly complained about media stories from unnamed sources he said were “dead wrong.” These stories were extremely damaging to President Trump. Did he do anything about that? No. Not only did he allow the stories to remain unchallenged, he himself played the game of putting out an anonymous leak.

One key moment in the testimony yesterday was U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio questioning why the leaks seemed to be selectively targeted at Trump.

“You ever wonder why, of all the things in this investigation, the only thing that’s never been leaked is the fact the president was not personally under investigation?” Rubio asked pointedly.

Comey’s weak response: “I don’t know.” Yeah, right, He knows. Donald Trump may be a liar. But James Comey is a phony.
