Langan, Xaverian oust Newton N.

- By MATT FELD

With the season on the brink, Owen Langan made sure Xaverian survived to live another day.

Yesterday, Langan spun 71⁄ innings of one-run ball 3 as the No. 6 Hawks defeated No. 7 Newton North, 4-1, in a Super Eight elimination game in Brockton.

Xaverian (14-8) advances to play BC High tomorrow.

Langan cruised through most of his outing, throwing more than 13 pitches in an inning only twice.

When Langan did get into trouble he was often aided by stellar defensive plays, none better than in the top of the fourth inning when with a runner on first and one out, Hawks shortstop Jake Cassidy made a diving play up the middle to start a 6-4-3 double play.

Xaverian coach Gerry Lambert said the big difference was his team’s flawless play in the field.

“It is one thing to make routine plays but we took some hits away,” said Lambert. “That was the biggest difference between today and our loss last week where we left the door open from some miscues for big innings.”

Xaverian grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second as Craig Jones walked, Ethan Rioux singled, and Dan Chapski knocked an RBI single to right field.

The Hawks extended their lead in the third. Vicente Mendoza worked a walk and two batters later catcher Aidan McLaughlin golfed a two-run home run into the left field bullpen to give Xaverian a 3-0 edge.

Newton North showed some life in the fifth as three straight two-out hits, capped off by Thomas Byrne’s RBI single, cut the Hawks’ lead to 3-1.

Tigers catcher Cole Whitehouse came to the plate as the go-ahead run and belted a fastball into the left-center gap. But Hawks center fielder Vicente Mendoza got a good jump on the ball and ran it down.

“I thought he got all of it,” said Lambert of Whitehouse’s ball. “(Mendoza) made a great play on that ball.”

Chapski gave the Hawks some insurance in the seventh with his second RBI single.

In the other elimination game, John Tellier threw a complete game and Braintree knocked off Central

Catholic, 5-2. The Wamps are among the final four Super Eight teams standing for the fourth straight season.

Kyle DeRoma’s seventhinning walkoff single gave No. 2 Lowell Catholic (184) a 6-5 victory over No. 3

O’Bryant in a Div. 4 North semifinal.

Xander Schubert pitched a four-hitter as No. 14 Cohasset (13-9) defeated No.

11 Sturgis East, 2-0, in a Div. 4 South quarterfinal. ... Brett Sullivan needed just 78 pitches to complete a shutout as No. 4 Archbishop Williams (17-5) defeated No. 5 Old Colony, 3-0. Casey Earle, Jack Rega and Ryan Bellew drove in runs for the Bishops.

In the Div. 3 South semifinals, Ryan Sliwinski went the distance while allowing five hits and striking out seven as No. 8 Dover

Sherborn (15-8) edged No. 4 Bourne, 4-3. Tylor Arruda doubled in the game-winning run in the ninth to lift No. 5

Greater New Bedford (17-6) to a 3-2 victory over No. 9

Hopkinton in a Div. 2 South semifinal.

Henry Funaro pitched a two-hitter, striking out 13, as No. 5 Lowell (16-7) knocked off top-seeded Methuen, 3-1, in a Div. 1 North semifinal.

In the Div. 1 South semifinals, Henry Weycker went 3-for-3 as No. 13 Wellesley (14-9) outlasted No. 8
