Immigration agents trying to interview a 43-yearold Salvadoran man charged with a drunkdriving car crash that injured two say they were stonewalled by a Massachusetts court supervisor who wouldn’t let them speak to the man until he was appointed an attorney in his criminal case.

Jose Acevedo, an Auburn resident who told police he entered the U.S. illegally through Mexico from El Salvador, rear-ended a 2015 Subaru Thursday, injuring two adult passengers, including the mother of a 3-yearold and a 7-year-old who were also in the vehicle, police said.

Acevedo, who police say appeared intoxicated at the scene, allegedly registered three times the legal limit when he was booked at the Auburn police station.

Agents with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement were blocked from questioning Acevedo at the courthouse yesterday, ICE spokesman Shawn Neudauer told the Herald.

“We attempted to question him, but we were blocked by a court supervisor, our officers, from interviewing him ... until the court appointed an attorney in the state criminal matters,” Neudauer said. “We wanted to talk to him for a federal purpose because he’s allegedly and self-admittedly unlawfully here, but we can’t verify that because we can’t talk to him.”

Neudauer said immigration agents are monitoring the situation and seeking to verify Acevedo’s biographical details through other means to determine whether he’s in the country illegally.
