Sharon juggernaut rolls on

ROCKLAND — Throughout her tenure, Sharon boys tennis coach Joan Cutter has always preached attention to the finer details, from her players’ footwork on the court to ensuring they keep up with the French Open off of it. Why? Because it works. The top-seeded Eagles continued to soar yesterday morning, remaining unbeaten in sweeping No. 3 Scituate, 5-0, to capture the Division 2 South title.

“Our practices just don’t have an end. They just go, and that’s what it takes,” Cutter said. “They’re just a great group, and they’ve all come together. And their story is just all of them helping each other get to this point.”

Sharon will take on Wayland for the state title tomorrow at 4 p.m. at St. John’s (Shrewsbury).

With Grif Fein and Fred Bondar cruising in straight sets in first singles, the Eagles (23-0) picked up key victories in second doubles and third singles. Sophomores Danujan Thirumavalavan and Max Brody won 6-3, 7-5, while Andre Olivei outlasted junior Matt DiPesa of Scituate (19-3) by a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 margin.

Fein, who won 6-1, 6-2 over Chris White, wore a big smile as he held the winner’s trophy.

“I wanted to be the Sharon team that won it as my senior year and as a captain,” Fein said. “So I’m excited that, as a captain, I’m going back to the championship. It’s going to be a fun last match. We’ll see how it goes.”

Hingham 5, Nauset 0 — When the state tournament first began, the Harborwomen implemented a simple, yet powerful battle cry: Fight together.

The phrase has proven to be a big form of motivation for the unbeaten top seeds (24-0), who are now just one win away from the Div. 2 state title following a sweep of the No. 2 Warirors (22-2) in the South final.

“It’s a team effort,” Hingham coach Linda Partridge said. “We’re all fighting for every single point. Every ball that comes over the net, get it back. So that’s how we came up with the ‘fight together.’ ”

Hingham will face Wayland for the state title tomorrow (2:30 p.m.) at St. John’s (Shrewsbury).

Freshman Lexi Dewire took first singles 6-0, 6-1, sending the top seeds on their way.

“It’s amazing, because I’ve never had in nine years an undefeated season,” said Partridge, who has coached three teams to the state final. “To be undefeated, right through this part of the playoffs, is just thrilling. We know we have a really tough opponent on Tuesday.”
